Although the basal ganglia have been implicated in the development of movement disorders since the 1940s, the exact role played by these structures has remained elusive. The development of the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-monkey model of parkinsonism, and the recent resurgence of surgical therapy for the treatment of hypokinetic and hyperkinetic movement disorders has, however, led to an improved understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie their development. In this article, we review the functional organization and examine the changes in neuronal activity that occur in the basal ganglia thalamocortical 'motor' circuit in these disorders.

Over a period of 388 days, associations were sought between the occurrence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), levels of atmospheric nitrogen-containing gases (NO, NO2, NH3), temperature and relative humidity. During this period, there were 282 AMI validated by the WHO-MONICA criteria. Analysis of the data revealed, a decrease in the area, in AMI, when daily nitric oxide levels were above 13 microg m(-3) and when the mean daily temperature was below 13 degrees C.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-five patients underwent comparative CO2 and iodinated contrast material arteriography of the abdominal aorta and lower extremities. For each contrast study, three independent observers evaluated the degree of opacification and percentage of stenosis of each vessel, the degree of certainty of their observations, and the overall quality of the study.
Mutations of the tumor suppressor gene TP53 have been detected in tumor tissues of a large variety of human malignancies and contribute to the development, progression and probably the prognosis of the disease. The pattern of somatic mutations in the TP53 gene in human tumors most often consists of a point mutation in one allele accompanied by loss or rearrangement of the second allele. Esophageal cancer is one of the most commonly mutated cancer, p53 mutations having an incidence greater than 80% in squamous cell carcinoma.

An epidemiological survey was carried out on 332 workers in a nitrogen fertilizer factory exposed to various levels of NO, NO2, NO3- and NH3. The population was divided into six groups as a function of the atmospheres in the different workshops and compared with a control group recruited outside the factory. We investigated the relations between the exposures of the different groups and serum levels of three nitrogen-containing derivatives involved in arginine metabolism: nitrates, creatinine and urea.

In this study Schild analysis was used to determine if antidepressants are competitive antagonists or allosteric modulators at GABAA receptors. GABA concentration-response curves for 36Cl- uptake in rat cerebral cortex were generated in the absence or presence of different concentrations of the following antidepressants: amitriptyline, amoxapine, mianserin, and also the GABAA receptor antagonist, bicuculline.

Traditional screening was based on evaluation of basal and stimulated serum calcitonin levels. The recent cloning of the MEN2 gene on the RET proto-oncogene of chromosome 10 now allows for testing of gene carrier status in individuals at risk who could benefit from prophylactic treatment.

"Soft" and "hard" are the two main market classes of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and are distinguished by expression of the Hardness gene. Friabilin, a marker protein for grain softness (Ha), consists of two proteins, puroindoline a and b (pinA and pinB, respectively).

Fifty patients, 32 girls and 18 boys, underwent thyroid surgery. Clinical presentation include a thyroid nodule (36 patients), a family history of MEN syndrome with a positive pentagastrin stimulation test (10), diffuse nodular goitre (3) and a neonatal cervical mass (1).

(1) In the first set of experiments, the infusion rates were constant and fixed at physiological flow rates. Under these conditions, the magnitude of the materno-fetal transfer was in the following order: *H2O = antipyrine = fentanyl > alfentanil > sufentanil.

Lumbar puncture revealed an elevated CSF protein and pleocytosis. Imaging procedures demonstrated osteomyelitis of the clivus that involved the epidural space and extended within the prevertebral space to the cervical spine.

The mechanisms by which introns are gained or lost in the evolution of eukaryotic genes remain poorly understood. The discovery that transposable elements sometimes alter RNA splicing to allow partial or imperfect removal of the element from the primary transcripts suggests that transposons are a potential and continuing source of new introns. To date, splicing events that precisely restore the wild-type RNA sequence at the site of insertion have not been detected.

However, in all sh2 and bt2 mutants so far examined, measurable ADPglucose pyrophosphorylase activity remains. We have investigated the origin of the residual activity found in various sh2 and bt2 mutants as well as tissue specific expression and post-translational modification of the Sh2 and Bt2 proteins.

Two methods of assaying alpha interferon (IFN-alpha) were compared during an experiment aimed at determining whether IFN-alpha crosses the human placenta. Human placentas, collected after delivery following a normal pregnancy to term, were catheterized on both sides: fetal and maternal. The IFN-alpha was introduced in known amounts in the maternal circulation and was assayed in the efferent fetal fluid.
