Accreditation of medical education in Brazil: an evaluation of seventy-six medical schools.

Background: We present the first results of the Accreditation System of Medical Schools (Sistema de Acreditação de Escolas Médicas - SAEME) in Brazil.

Methods: We evaluated the results of the accreditation of medical schools from 2015 to 2023. The self-evaluation form of the SAEME is specific for medical education programs and has eighty domains, which results in final decisions that are sufficient or insufficient for each domain.

Effects of pasture intensification and sugarcane cultivation on non-target species: A realistic evaluation in pesticide-contaminated mesocosms.

Conventional soil management in agricultural areas may expose non-target organisms living nearby to several types of contaminants. In this study, the effects of soil management in extensive pasture (EP), intensive pasture (IP), and sugarcane crops (C) were evaluated in a realistic-field-scale study. Thirteen aquatic mesocosms embedded in EP, IP, and C treatments were monitored over 392 days.

Biophysical Behavior of Very High-Power Short-Duration Radiofrequency Ablation in Pulmonary Vein Isolation: Fast but Gently-Implications for a Successful Procedure.

The very high-power short-duration (vHP-SD) ablation strategy is an alternative for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). However, the acute procedural biophysical behavior of successful lesion creation by means of this technique is still unexplored. We performed a retrospective case-control study aimed at evaluating the behavior of vHP-SD ablation parameters with the QDOT MICRO™ ablation catheter (Biosense Webster) compared with standard radiofrequency (RF) ablation with the THERMOCOOL SMARTTOUCH ablation catheter.

Teaching of composite restoration repair in Brazilian dental schools.

Objectives: The aim was to investigate aspects of the teaching of restoration repair as a minimally invasive alternative to replacing defective direct composite restorations in undergraduate curricula teaching programs in Brazilian dental schools.

Methods: A 14-item validated survey questionnaire was mailed to directors/coordinators of operative/restorative dentistry teachers of Brazilian Dental Schools. Data were collected on demographic characteristics of the teachers and institutions, together with questions on the teaching of the repair of defective resin-based composite restorations as part of the school curriculum; the rationale behind the teaching; the nature of the teaching (preclinical and/or clinical); how techniques were taught, indications for repair, operative techniques, materials used, patient acceptability and expected longevity of completed repairs.

Using mesocosms to evaluate the impacts of pasture intensification and pasture-sugarcane conversion on tadpoles in Brazil.

This study evaluated the effects of environmental contamination caused by pasture intensification and pasture-sugarcane conversion on oxidative stress, biotransformation, esterase enzymes, and development of Scinax fuscovarious and Physalaemus nattereri. Tadpoles were exposed in mesocosms allocated in three treatments: (1) untreated extensive pasture (EP); (2) intensive-pasture conversion (IP) (2,4-D herbicide + fertilizers); and (3) pasture-sugarcane conversion (SC) (fipronil + 2,4-D + fertilizers). After 7 days of exposure, IP reduced catalase (CAT) and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in P.

Purpose: The purpose of this overview of systematic reviews of clinical studies was to assess the available evidence-based literature on the influence of associated clinical factors on the clinical performance (survival, failure rate, or success) of restored endodontically treated teeth.

Material And Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception until September 27, 2021, to identify systematic reviews.

Oro-dental lesions in pediatric patients with celiac disease: an observational retrospective clinical study.

Background And Aim Of The Study: To investigate the correlation between celiac disease and specific oral lesions.

Methods: 114 pediatric patients were enrolled and divided into three groups: celiac patients (CD group), patients with malabsorption without celiac disease (non-CD group) and healthy controls. Material And Methods: Survey studies, written in English, of dentists and dental students, which evaluated the use of intracanal posts and other restorative options for endodontically treated teeth, were selected.

Preceptors' perception of their role as educators and professionals in a health system.

Background: Preceptorship fulfills the requirements of International Guidelines regarding the training of health care professionals as a method of teaching in clinical settings, during the daily work routine. This study aims to analyze the preceptors' perceptions about preceptorship and their role as educators.

Methods: Data were collected via a questionnaire with 35 five-point Likert-type scale statements and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative approaches.

Effect of photoactivation on the reduction of composite resin contamination.

Composite resins are predominantly marketed in developing countries in tube form, and the contents of the tube may be used in numerous procedures for different patients. This represents a problem because of the risk of cross-contamination. This study aimed to evaluate contamination in vitro of the internal contents of composite resin tubes in the dental clinics of a higher-education institution, as well as the effect of photoactivation on the level of contamination.

Phytochemical Characteristics of Seeds and Its Effects on the Intestinal Motility and Toxicity of Joannesia princeps.

Joannesia princeps is a plant commonly used in folk medicine as laxative for menstrual discomfort and as antihelminthic and antimicrobial to reduce edema and improve tissue healing. The seeds are used in many regions of Brazil as laxative; however, studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of using seeds of this plant on intestinal motility of Wistar rats, evaluate the effects and acute toxicity of its management, as well as determine its phytochemical profile.

Sudden Death of Citrus in Brazil: A Graft-Transmissible Bud Union Disease.

Citrus Sudden Death (CSD), a new, graft-transmissible disease of sweet orange and mandarin trees grafted on Rangpur lime rootstock, was first seen in 1999 in Brazil, where it is present in the southern Triângulo Mineiro and northwestern São Paulo State. The disease is a serious threat to the citrus industry, as 85% of 200 million sweet orange trees in the State of São Paulo are grafted on Rangpur lime. After showing general decline symptoms, affected trees suddenly collapse and die, in a manner similar to trees grafted on sour orange rootstock when affected by tristeza decline caused by infection with Citrus tristeza virus (CTV).

[Fulminant liver failure caused by antitubercular drugs. Report of a clinical case].

The incidence of tuberculosis has grown seriously in the last ten years and so have the risks due to drug toxicity of Ethambutol, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide, Rifampicin. One of the questions is whether a careful monitoring of liver function during anti-tubercular chemotherapy could be useful, given that once severe organ toxicity initiates the survival rate remains under 10% if organ transplant is not available. International literature shows a clear prevalence of this event in Asiatic populations which are now well represented in Italy owing to incoming migrations.

[Chronic suppurative osteomyelitis. Report of a case].

After a short introduction about the most important clinical and radiologic features of chronic osteomyelitis of the jaw, the Authors describe the case of a patient affected by the above mentioned pathology since 1984. The understatement of this pathology had led to an involvement of the inferior alveolar nerve. Finally, the Authors emphasize the importance of a combined therapy, both pharmacological and surgical, to eliminate the infection.
