Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and antibacterial resistance (ABR) are important public health problems, but they are not well-studied among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) globally, especially in low-income countries. Therefore, it is important to regularly measure the extent of UTIs and ABR in the most susceptible populations. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of UTIs, associated factors, bacterial causal agents, and their antibiotic susceptibility profile among PLHIV in central Ethiopia.

Three monozygotic twin pairs with the Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases-specific mutation E200K are described. All three have been concordant for genetic CJD and discordant for the age at death and the duration of the disease. Twin pairs have been compared with genetically non - identical sibling pairs also concordant for genetic CJD and discordant for the age at death.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a rare, but rapidly progressive, up to now untreatable and fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Clinical diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is difficult; however, it can be facilitated by suitable biomarkers. Aim of the present study is to compare levels of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers (total tau protein, phosphorylated-tau protein, protein 14-3-3 and amyloid beta) in Slovak population of CJD suspect cases, retrospectively in over a 10-year period.

The C-to-T transition within exon 2 of the cathepsin D (CTSD) gene is associated with altered enzymatic activity. Possession of the TT genotype is a risk factor for variant CJD.

We have compared the immunomorphological spectrum of the deposition of the disease-associated prion protein (PrP(Sc)) in the cerebral and cerebellar cortex of 32 Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) patients with the PrP gene (PRNP) E200K mutation to 45 sporadic CJD and 14 other genetic prion disease cases. PrP deposits correlate with the genotype at the methionine/valine (MV) polymorphic codon 129. While the diffuse/synaptic and patchy/perivacuolar PrP deposits and PrP plaques have a similar distribution and correlation with the genotype at codon 129 as in sporadic CJD, an additional peculiar PrP immunostaining pattern occurs in the cerebellum in 81% E200K mutation brains including 93% of M129M, 71% of M129V, but not in the single V129V case.

Earlier studies have failed to detect covalent modifications in beta-sheet-rich scrapie isoform prion protein (PrP(Sc)) and have concluded that the conversion of alpha-helix-rich cellular form prion protein (PrP(C)) to PrP(Sc) represents purely conformational transition not involving chemical reactions. However, recent studies have shown that the intradisulfide bond of PrP(C) can play an important role for instability and conformational change to PrP(Sc). Interestingly, we found overexpressed protein disufide isomerase (PDI) in brains of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD, human prion disease) patients using two dimensional electrophoresis and Western blot analysis but not in other neurodegenerative disorders as Down Syndrome and Alzheimer's disease.
