Antidiabetic Action of Mcy Protein: Studies on Gene Expression and Competitive Binding to Insulin Receptors.

Mcy protein, isolated from the fruits of Momordica cymbalaria, was shown to have antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic activities along with renal as well as hepatoprotective activities in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Mcy protein was shown to have insulin-like structure and/or function and/or insulin secretagogue activity. Hence, the present study was conducted to elucidate the molecular mechanism whereby Mcy protein elicits its therapeutic role and also to know whether the Mcy protein has any structural and functional similarity with insulin.

Deficiency of folate and vitamin B increases oxidative stress in chronic pancreatitis patients.

Background: Folate and vitamin B are involved in metabolic reactions for combating oxidative stress. We measured erythrocyte folate and plasma vitamin B and compared these with blood antioxidants - erythrocyte glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and plasma vitamin C - and marker of lipid peroxidation, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), in chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients.

Methods: One hundred and seventy-five CP patients (91 tropical, 84 alcoholic) and 113 healthy controls were recruited.

Anomalous left hepatic vein to coronary sinus in a patient with atrial septal defect: Minimally invasive approach; technical challenges.

Left hepatic vein draining into coronary sinus is a rare systemic vascular anomaly. Its presence is significant when it is associated with other cardiac lesions requiring surgery. We report technical challenges in a case of persistent left superior vena cava and left hepatic vein draining into coronary sinus in an adult with ostium secundum atrial septal defect, which was repaired through minimally invasive approach.

Targeting the tumor microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma using nano-phytomedicines.

Background: Recent studies reported that Nudix Hydrolase 15(NUDT 15) gene variant (C415T) can better predict thiopurine induced leucopenia in Asian patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) than thiopurine S-methyl transferase (TPMT).

Aim: To evaluate the role of the NUDT variant compared with TPMT in predicting azathioprine induced leucopenia in Indian IBD patients.

Context: In fertilization (IVF) cycles, the recommended dose of recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin (r-hCG), for triggering final follicular maturation is 250 μg, although there is some disagreement.

Aims: The aim of our study was to assess the effect on the number of mature oocytes retrieved after triggering ovulation in IVF cycles using 250 μg or 500 μg of r-hCG.

Induction of vitellogenesis, methyl farnesoate synthesis and ecdysteroidogenesis in two edible crabs by arachidonic acid and prostaglandins.

The present study investigated the effect of arachidonic acid (AA) and selected prostaglandins on the regulation of vitellogenesis, ecdysteroidogenesis and methyl farnesoate (MF) synthesis in the freshwater crab and the giant mud crab, Administration of AA and prostaglandin F (PGF) and prostaglandin E (PGE) significantly increased ovarian index, oocyte diameter and ovarian vitellogenin levels and ecdysteroid and MF levels in the hemolymph of crabs. Secretions of MF and ecdysteroids from cultured mandibular organs (MO) and Y-organs (YO) isolated from intermolt crabs injected with AA, PGF and PGE were greater when compared with controls. In contrast, injection of prostaglandin D (PGD) had no effect on vitellogenesis, ecdysteroid and MF levels in circulation.

Chronic uterine inversion with malignancy mimicking carcinoma cervix.

Chronic non-puerperal uterine inversion is a rare event, with only a handful of cases reported in literature. We report a case of a 64-year-old postmenopausal woman who presented with complaints of mass per vaginam and postmenopausal bleeding. On examination, she appeared to have third-degree cervical descent with an irregular growth seen over what appeared to be the cervix, biopsy of which showed keratinising squamous cell carcinoma.

Arsenic aggravated reproductive toxicity in male rats exposed to lead during the perinatal period.

The aim of this study was to assess the reproductive toxic effects of arsenic on adult Wistar rats exposed to lead during the perinatal period. The pregnant rats were allowed access to tap water containing 819 mg of lead (Pb) per L or without Pb from conception until weaning. Litter size, survival rate and developmental milestones of the pups delivered by Pb exposed dams were comparable to those of the control rats.

Evidence for retinoic acid involvement in the regulation of vitellogenesis in the fresh water edible crab, Oziotelphusa senex senex.

The possible involvement of 13-cis retinoic acid (CRA) in the regulation of ovarian development in Oziotelphusa senex senex was investigated. Injection of CRA, into avitellogenic crabs significantly increased ovarian index, oocyte diameter and ovarian vitellogenin levels. Injection of CRA also resulted in a significant increase in the secretory rates of mandibular organs and Y-organs and circulatory levels of the methyl farnesoate and ecdysteroids.

Alleviative effect of resveratrol on polyvinyl chloride-induced reproductive toxicity in male Wistar rats.

The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of PVC on reproductive competence in adult male Wistar rats. Further, the study also encompasses the protective effect of trans-resveratrol on PVC-induced reproductive toxicity in rats. Adult male rats weighing 210-240 g were administered with either PVC at two different doses 100 and 500 mg/kg body weight, orally, daily for 60 days or resveratrol (20 mg/kg body weight/day) through gavage for 60 days on alternate days or both PVC (500 mg/kg body weight) and resveratrol.

Forskolin ameliorates mancozeb-induced testicular and epididymal toxicity in Wistar rats by reducing oxidative toxicity and by stimulating steroidogenesis.

In the present study, we have tested the beneficial effects of forskolin in protecting the mancozeb-induced reproductive toxicity in rats. Adult male Wistar rats were exposed to either mancozeb (500 mg/kg body weight/day) or forskolin (5 mg/kg body weight/day) or both for 65 days and analyzed for spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis and testicular and epididymal oxidative toxicity. A significant decrease in daily sperm production, epididymal sperm count, motile, viable, and hypo-osmotic swelling-tail swelled sperm was observed in mancozeb-treated rats.

Effect of maintenance tocolysis with nifedipine in established preterm labour on pregnancy prolongation and neonatal outcome.

Fifty women with singleton pregnancies between 26 and 33weeks of gestation and arrested preterm labour (PTL) after acute tocolysis were randomised by a computer generated randomisation table into an intervention group (n = 25) who received maintenance tocolysis with tablet nifedipine for 12 days or up to 34 weeks of gestation, whichever was later and a control group (n = 25). The primary outcome was achievement of term gestation and the secondary outcomes were the number of days gained till delivery and neonatal mortality and morbidity. The mean gestation at admission, cervical dilatation and effacement were similar in the two groups (30 + weeks, 2.
