Bacterial infections have a large impact on public health. Through this study, we report on the development of complementary split-ring resonators (CSRR) supplemented by functionalized nanoparticles to detect bacteria in the aqueous medium. Two strains (JC85(T) and JC108) of Gram-stain-negative, motile bacteria were isolated from endolithic beach sand samples on an oligotrophic medium. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, both strains were identified as belonging to the genus Rhizobium. Strain JC108 had 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 100 % with Rhizobium pusense NRCPB10(T) and formed a cluster with this strain.

An oval to rod-shaped, phototrophic, purple non-sulfur bacterium, strain JA192(T), was isolated from an enrichment culture of a pasteurized rhizosphere soil sample from a field cultivated with jowar (sorghum) collected from Godumakunta village near Hyderabad, India. Strain JA192(T) is Gram-negative, motile and produces endospores. Phylogenetic analysis on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain JA192(T) is closely related to Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.

Extracts from plants of Loranthaceae family collected from 15 host trees were screened for their cytocidal activity to tumour cells. Biologically active extracts prepared from Helicanthis elasticus grown on Mangifera indica and Citrus maxima (host trees) were partially purified by the gel filtration method. The purified material was found to be cytotoxic in vitro and reduced solid and ascites tumours in mice when given either simultaneously or prophylactically.
