Background: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is one of the challenging forms of TB to treat, not only in adults but also in children and adolescents. Further, there is a void in the treatment strategy exclusively for children due to various reasons, including paucity of pharmacokinetic (PK) data on anti-TB drugs across the globe. A total of 38 children were enrolled for the quantitative component, and 20 in-depth interviews were conducted. Spinal tuberculosis (TB) is a disease of high morbidity that is associated with deformity and neurological sequelae, especially in growing children. Children diagnosed with spinal TB need to be monitored closely for clinical improvements. Previous history of antituberculous therapy (ATT), poor adherence to previous ATT, contact with persons having known drug-resistant (DR) TB, or clinical worsening despite regular ATT are strong indicators for the diagnosis of DR TB of the spine.

A simple and efficient three components domino reaction of γ-butyrolactam (2-pyrrolidinone), aromatic aldehyde and substituted thiophenol catalyzed by elemental iodine resulted in the formation of 1-((phenylthio)(phenyl)methyl)pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives. The stability of the synthesized analogues was evaluated in stimulated gastric fluid (SGF) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). In vitro anticancer activity was investigated in the low micromolar range and a few analogues were found to possess good activity.

We have identified a natural compound that activates apoptosis of epithelial cancer cells through activation of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), TNF receptor (TNFR)-associated death domain (TRADD), and caspases. The molecule 1-hydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-2-naphthalene-carboxaldehyde (HDNC, marmelin) was isolated and characterized from ethyl acetate fraction of extracts of Aegle marmelos. HDNC treatment inhibited the growth of HCT-116 colon cancer tumor xenografts in vivo.

The present study is on the growth inhibitory effect of Withania somnifera methanolic leaf extract and its active component, withanolide on HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells. The decrease in survival rate of HL-60 cells was noted to be associated with a time dependent decrease in the Bcl-2/Bax ratio, leading to up regulation of Bax. Both the crude leaf extract and the active component activated the apoptotic cascade through the cytochrome c release from mitochondria.

A multiplex PCR (mPCR) for the differentiation of Indian FMDV serotypes, O, A, Asia 1 and C was developed and evaluated on 142 clinical and 39 cell culture samples. On the latter samples both the tests worked well with 100% efficiency, whereas on clinical samples mPCR had better efficiency than ELISA. The test was found to be specific for FMDV.

Complete nucleotide sequences except the poly (C) tract and poly (A) tail of a vaccine strain (IND 491/97) and an atypical field isolate (IND 321/01) of Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) serotype Asia1 are described. Amino acid (aa) sequence analysis of the VP1 protein of the field isolate revealed that the latter has 212 instead of 210 or 211 aa found in the so far available sequences of other FMDV isolates of Asia1 serotype. The insertion was localized in the hypervariable region of aa 130-160 of VP1 protein.

Conventional solvent fractionation and bioactivity based target assays were used to identify a new anti-cancer molecule from Phyllanthus urinaria, a herbal medicinal plant used in South India. At each step of the purification process the different fractions that were isolated were tested for specific anti-proliferative activity by assays measuring the inhibition of [(3)H]thymidine incorporation, and trypan blue drug exclusion. The ethyl acetate fraction that contained the bioactivity was further purified and resolved by HPLC on a preparative column.
