Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a pathological condition that develops when a thrombus forms within the deep venous system. Typically, it involves the lower limbs and, less frequently, the upper extremities or other unusual districts such as cerebral or splanchnic veins. While leg DVT itself is rarely fatal and occasionally can lead to limb-threatening implications, its most fearsome complication, namely pulmonary embolism, is potentially fatal and significantly contributes to increased healthcare costs and impaired quality of life in affected patients and caregivers.

Objective: Evaluate sex differences in patients undergoing repair of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD).

Methods: Sex-stratified, single-center cohort study of patients undergoing ATAAD repair from 1997 to 2022. The primary outcome was aortic diameter at time of presentation with ATAAD.

Over the last decade, the advent of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) has rapidly changed the landscape of anticoagulation. In the early 2010s, DOACs became widely available for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation and the treatment of venous thromboembolism. About 10 years later, approximately two-thirds of patients requiring oral anticoagulant treatment were receiving a DOAC.

Purpose: We aimed to identify the correlation between morphological pronuclear (PN) status and the genetically determined ploidy configuration in preimplantation embryos.

Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 1982 embryos displaying normal fertilization and 380 embryos showing an atypical PN pattern, tested for aneuploidies and ploidy status via preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) between May 2019 and May 2024. Ploidy prediction was performed using a validated targeted-NGS approach and a proprietary bioinformatic pipeline analyzing SNPs B-allele frequency information.

Background: Catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) is one of the major complications affecting patients with indwelling venous catheters, usually involving the upper extremity deep venous system. This condition can lead to potentially life-threatening complications such as pulmonary embolism and sepsis. The risk of developing CRT varies depending on type of catheters and patient characteristics.

The recovery of copper and other valuable metals had become increasingly strategic for the future of the global economy, particularly in regions lacking abundant mineral resources, such as most European countries. In this study, we investigated the viability of utilizing environmentally friendly, cost-effective, abundant and bio-based ligands, specifically carboxylic acids and their derivatives, for copper leaching in a low-temperature hydrometallurgical process. Our investigation focused on elucidating the impact of substituents in the α position of hydroxy-carboxylic acids on copper solubilization efficacy.

Objective: Reoperative aortic root replacement (ARR) is a technically challenging procedure. This study assesses the influence of reoperation on outcomes following ARR, particularly after prior acute type A aortic dissection repair.

Methods: Of the 1823 patients in this study, 1592 (87.

Objective: We sought to evaluate outcomes of valve-sparing root replacement (VSRR) in patients with bicuspid aortopathy (BAV) versus other connective tissue disorder (CTD).

Methods: This was a single-center cohort study of consecutive patients undergoing VSRR via reimplantation from 2000 to 2023 with BAV or CTD. Operative outcomes, Kaplan-Meier survival estimates, and cumulative risk of reoperation and recurrent aortic insufficiency (AI) with the competing risk of death were assessed.

Introduction: The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) is widely utilized for risk stratification for non-cardiac surgical patients, yet it has not been broadly validated in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We aim to assess its ability to predict early and late outcomes of concomitant mitral valve intervention with ascending aortic surgery.

Methods: Patients who underwent surgery between 1997 and 2022 were reviewed.

Introduction: Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) increases the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE). AECOPD and PE have similar symptoms which results in a high proportion of patients with AECOPD undergoing imaging to rule out PE. Finding predictors and explanatory factors of PE in AECOPD, such as purulence status, could help reduce the need for imaging.

Background: We compared the outcomes of aortic root replacement by composite valve grafts (CVG) and valve-sparing root replacement (VSRR) operations, with an emphasis on postoperative conduction block and the need for permanent pacemaker implantation (PPM).

Methods: From 1997 to 2023, 1712 consecutive patients underwent ARR by VSRR (501 [29%]) or CVG (1211 [71%]) at a high-volume aortic center.

Results: Patients undergoing CVG were older (59 ± 14 vs 49 ± 14 years, P < .

Introduction: Approximately 10 % of all diagnosed pulmonary embolism are isolated to the subsegmental vessels. The risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with an acute subsegmental pulmonary embolism (SSPE) managed with or without anticoagulant therapy remains poorly understood.

Methods: This is an observational cohort study including consecutive adult patients diagnosed with acute isolated SSPE between June 01, 2019, and August 31, 2022.

Importance: The overall prevalence of mitral valve replacement (MVR) or MV repair at the time of cardiac surgery in the setting of isolated anterior mitral leaflet degenerative pathologic status in the US population is unknown.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of MVR and MV repair using the Society of Thoracic Surgeons' Adult Cardiac Surgery Database.

Design, Setting, And Participants: In a cross-sectional study, all patients diagnosed with isolated anterior mitral leaflet degenerative regurgitation who underwent either surgical MVR or MV repair between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2022, were identified.

Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) were proven effective in inducing tumor regression. However, its toxicity tends to be fatal. We sought to investigate the hospital volume/outcomes relationship.

Objectives: Midline sternotomy is the main surgical access for cardiac surgeries. The most prominent complication of sternotomy is sternal wound infection (SWI). The use of a thorax support vest (TSV) that limits thorax movement and ensures sternal stability has been suggested to prevent postoperative SWI.

Background: Women undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) have higher operative mortality than men.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between intraoperative anemia (nadir intraoperative hematocrit), CABG operative mortality, and sex.

Methods: This was a cohort study of 1,434,225 isolated primary CABG patients (344,357 women) from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (2011-2022).

Objective: As autoimmune encephalitis (AE) often involves the mesial temporal structures which are known to be involved in both sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and ictal asystole (IA), it may represent a good model to study the physiopathology of these phenomena. Herein, we systematically reviewed the occurrence of SUDEP and IA in AE.

Methods: We searched 4 databases (MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science) for studies published between database inception and December 20, 2022, according to the PRISMA guidelines.
