Although the topic of sensory integration has raised increasing interest, the differing behavioral outcome of combining unisensory versus multisensory inputs has surprisingly only been scarcely investigated. The morphology of crystalline precipitates in a solid-state matrix is governed by complex but tractable energetic considerations driven largely by volume strain energy minimization and anisotropy of interfacial energies. Spherical precipitate morphologies are favored by isotropic systems, while anisotropic interfacial energies give energetic preference to certain crystallographically oriented interfaces, resulting in a faceted precipitate morphology. In conventional solid-solution precipitation, a precipitate's morphological evolution is mediated by surface anchoring of capping molecules, which dramatically alter the surface energy in an anisotropic manner, thereby providing exquisite morphology control during crystal growth.

Pd-catalyzed intermolecular aerobic dehydrogenative aromatizations have been developed for the arylation of amines with nonaromatic ketones. Adult olfactory ectomesenchymal stem cells (OE-MSCs) and olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs), both from the nasal olfactory lamina propria, display robust regenerative properties when transplanted into the nervous system, but the mechanisms supporting such therapeutic effects remain unknown. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are an important family of proteinases contributing to cell motility and axonal outgrowth across the extracellular matrix (ECM) in physiological and pathological conditions. Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a developmental disorder that has one of the highest familial recurrence rates among neuropsychiatric diseases with complex inheritance. However, the identification of definitive TS susceptibility genes remains elusive. Here, we report the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) of TS in 1285 cases and 4964 ancestry-matched controls of European ancestry, including two European-derived population isolates, Ashkenazi Jews from North America and Israel and French Canadians from Quebec, Canada.

Deleterious consequences of heterozygous OPA1 mutations responsible for autosomal dominant optic atrophy remain a matter of debate. Primary skin fibroblasts derived from patients have shown diverse mitochondrial alterations that were however difficult to resolve in a unifying scheme. Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a major contributor to the burden of stroke on society. Treatment options are limited and animal models of SAH do not always mimic key pathophysiological hallmarks of the disease, thus hindering development of new therapeutics. After a human case was confirmed in Comoros in 2007, 4 serosurveys among ruminants in Mayotte suggested that Rift Valley fever virus had been circulating at low levels since 2004, although no clinical cases occurred in animals. We investigated the efficiencies of two different approaches to increase the radiation hardness of optical amplifiers through development of improved rare-earth (RE) doped optical fibers. We demonstrated the efficiency of codoping with Cerium the core of Erbium/Ytterbium doped optical fibers to improve their radiation tolerance. We compared the γ-rays induced degradation of two amplifiers with comparable pre-irradiation characteristics (~19 dB gain for an input power of ~10 dBm): first one is made with the standard core composition whereas the second one is Ce codoped.

To describe the clinical and electrophysiological features evoking CMT4C, an autosomal recessive (AR) form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) due to mutations in the SH3TC2 gene, we screened the coding sequence of SH3TC2 gene in 102 unrelated patients with a demyelinating or intermediate CMT and a family history compatible with an AR transmission. We identified among this cohort 16 patients carrying two mutations in the SH3TC2 gene, but medical records finally analyzed 14 patients. We report clinical, electrophysiological, and molecular data of 14 patients (9 men, 5 women) with CMT4C.

We report transient radiation-induced effects on solid core microstructured optical fibers (MOFs). The kinetics and levels of radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) in the visible and near-infrared part of the spectrum (600 nm-2000 nm) were characterized. It is found that the two tested MOFs, fabricated by the stack-and-draw technique, present a good radiation tolerance.

Pulsed blue light at 489 nm has been generated by second-harmonic-generation of a nanosecond pulsed master-oscillator power amplifier system based on a short Yb(3+) doped single-mode fiber amplifier at 978 nm and an external-cavity diode laser as seed source. The Yb(3+)-doped fiber was core-pumped by a W type Nd(3+) doped double-clad fiber laser operating on the transition near 930 nm ((4)F(3/2)→(4)I(9/2)). 520 mW of average power was generated at 489 nm using a periodically poled MgO:LiNbO(3), corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 34%.
