Circulating T cells, which migrate from the periphery to sites of tissue inflammation, play a crucial role in the development of various chronic inflammatory conditions. Recent research has highlighted subsets of tissue-resident T cells that acquire migratory capabilities and re-enter circulation, referred to here as "recirculating T cells." In this review, we examine recent advancements in understanding the biology of T cell trafficking in diseases where T cell infiltration is pivotal, such as multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as in metabolic disorders where the role of T cell migration is less understood.

Obesity is characterized by the accumulation of T cells in insulin-sensitive tissues, including the visceral adipose tissue (VAT), that can interfere with the insulin signaling pathway eventually leading to insulin resistance (IR) and type 2 diabetes. Here, we found that PD-1CD4 conventional T (Tconv) cells, endowed with a transcriptomic and functional profile of partially dysfunctional cells, are diminished in VAT of obese patients with dysglycemia (OB-Dys), without a concomitant increase in apoptosis. These cells showed enhanced capacity to recirculate into the bloodstream and had a non-restricted TCRβ repertoire divergent from that of normoglycemic obese and lean individuals.

Multiple and complex aetiological processes underlie diabetes mellitus, which invariably result in the development of hyperglycaemia. Although there are two prevalent distinct forms of the disease, that is, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, accumulating evidence indicates that these syndromes share more aetiopathological mechanisms than originally thought. Purpose Of Review: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most frequent chronic autoimmune diseases in humans, characterized by the lack of insulin production resulting in high blood glucose levels and lifelong requirement of exogenous insulin administration for survival. It is now recognized that the autoimmune process begins years before the clinical onset, in a stage called pre-symptomatic T1D, in which the presence of β-cell-specific autoantibodies is detectable. Our aim is to review evidence for T1D as a "whole-pancreas disease," featured by both endocrine and exocrine pancreas alterations already at early disease stages.

The ACVR1 gene encodes a type I receptor of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). Activating mutations in ACVR1 are responsible for fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare disease characterized by congenital toe malformation and progressive heterotopic endochondral ossification leading to severe and cumulative disability. Aim: Cognitive visual dysfunctions (CVDs) reflect an impairment of the capacity to process visual information. The question of whether CVDs might be classifiable according to the nature and distribution of the underlying brain damage is an intriguing one in child neuropsychology.

Method: We studied 22 children born preterm (12 males, 10 females; mean age at examination 8y, range 6-15y; mean gestational age 30wks, range 28-36wks) with periventricular leukomalacia, spastic diplegia, normal intelligence (mean Full-scale IQ 84; mean Verbal IQ 97; mean Performance IQ 74), and normal visual acuity, focusing on higher visual functions.

Plasticity of visual systems after early brain damage has been extensively studied in animal models but poorly documented in children after visual pathway lesions. This report describes the visual recovery of a male child who had a bilateral occipital lobe infarction at the age of 2 years 6 months, 10 days after colon resection for Hirschsprung disease. In the acute phase he had severe visual impairment without visual response.

This study documents the age-dependent development of visual object recognition abilities in 115 children aged 6 to 11 years, using a battery of neuropsychological tests based on Marrs model (Efron test, Warringtons Figure-Ground Test, Street Completion Test, Poppelreuter-Ghent Test, a selection of stimuli from the Birmingham Object Recognition Battery, a series of color photographs of objects presented from unusual perspectives or illuminated in unusual ways). The results suggest a maturation of complex visual perceptual abilities, possibly related to the development of the cerebral processes involved in object recognition, and could be the starting point for future investigations of these skills in impaired populations.
