Among marine ecosystems globally, those in the Mediterranean Sea, are facing many threats. New technologies are crucial for enhancing our understanding of marine habitats and ecosystems, which can be complex and resource-intensive to analyse using traditional techniques. We tested, for the first time, an integrated multi-platform approach for mapping the coastal benthic habitat in the Civitavecchia (northern Latium, Italy) coastal area.

Although the Mediterranean Sea is a crucial hotspot in marine biodiversity, it has been threatened by numerous anthropogenic pressures. As flagship species, Cetaceans are exposed to those anthropogenic impacts and global changes. Assessing their conservation status becomes strategic to set effective management plans.

Major oil spills can cause significant impacts on marine-coastal zones, particularly on areas with a high oil spill risk, which combine a high oil spill hazard-high likelihood of oil stranding at high concentrations, and a high environmental sensitivity-high concentration of highly sensitive ecological and socioeconomic resources. In this context, a straightforward multicriteria methodology is proposed to determine the second factor of the oil spill risk, namely the strategic environmental sensitivity (SES), in 68 sectors covering the entire Peruvian marine-coastal zone. The methodology comprised the weighted integration of physical, biological, and socioeconomic sensitivity indicators based on their relevance in surface marine oil spills and the Peruvian ecological and socioeconomic context.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the abundance, distribution, and composition of both floating and seabed litter in the Central Adriatic Sea, focusing on macro and micro levels.
  • Floating macro litter was found at an average of 175 items/km, while floating micro litter and seabed micro litter were observed at 127,000 particles/km and 36 particles/100g dry weight, respectively, mirroring trends seen in other Mediterranean research.
  • A significant correlation was noted between concentrations of floating micro and macro litter, indicating possible connections, but discrepancies between models and observations highlighted gaps in understanding sea circulation and litter sources.

Successfully enforced marine protected areas (MPAs) have been widely demonstrated to allow, within their boundaries, the recovery of exploited species and beyond their boundaries, the spillover of juvenile and adult fish. Little evidence is available about the so-called 'recruitment subsidy', the augmented production of propagules (i.e.
