Chronic venous insufficiency and venous microangiopathy: management with compression and Pycnogenol®.

Background: The aim of this prospective supplement summer registry study was to evaluate the efficacy of Pycnogenol® in controlling symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and microcirculatory parameters: venous hypertension and microangiopathy. Pycnogenol® (Horphag Research) is the standardized extract of the bark of Pinus Pinaster.

Methods: During the summer period between June and August 142 patients were split into three groups: 1) Pycnogenol® 150 mg/day; 2) compression stockings; 3) and compression + Pycnogenol®.

Phlebology is not a specialty for its own in Italy. Phlebological patients are treated by vascular and general surgeons, dermatologists, phlebologists, angiologists, internists and even general practitioners. Even tough guidelines present a series of recommendations based on evidence-based medicine, guidelines may also be a tool to unify the diagnostic and therapeutic approach in a vast medical field like phlebology.

Superficial venous incompetence: low-cost outpatient minisurgery, sclerotherapy and combined procedure as a management plan. Costs and efficacy. A 20-year, follow-up registry.

Background: This registry study evaluated low-cost outpatient surgery (mini-S) for venous insufficiency as an alternative to stripping.

Methods: This 20-year follow-up is focused on the recurrence of varices and on the long-term efficacy of the mini-S (group 1) in comparison with controls (2, stripping), sclerotherapy (3) or a combination of mini-S+sclerotherapy (4). Costs were compared.

The efficacy of sulodexide in the prevention of postthrombotic syndrome.

Aim: The aim of this open, observational registry was to evaluate the effects of antithrombotic treatment on the development of postthrombotic syndrome (PTS): the effects of "standard management" (SM; according to International Union of Angiology guidelines) were compared to SM in association with sulodexide or aspirin.

Methods: Postthrombotic syndrome occurrence was observed in 3 nonparallel groups after deep venous thrombosis (DVT); the registry started after the end of the anticoagulation period. The target was to observe the occurrence of PTS in 5 years.

Guidelines for venous thromboembolism and clinical practice in Italy: a nationwide survey.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common health problem for today's society, and considering the role that it plays in surgical patients (general surgery, gynecology, and orthopedics), new advances in our understanding of the procedures and trauma characteristics are relevant and necessary. The most important and recently published guidelines concerning this problem have been taken into consideration, leading to articulate investigations and data evaluation. This project has proposed a data-survey framework available as a questionnaire in order to investigate application of the guidelines for VTE throughout the national territory.
