Liver resection, besides stimulating hepatocyte proliferation, induces reactive oxygen species (ROS), triggering apoptosis. To clarify the role of Alrp in the process of liver regeneration, hepatocyte proliferation, apoptosis, ROS-induced parameters and morphological findings of regenerating liver were studied from PH rats Alrp-treated for 72 h after the surgery.

Hepatocarcinogenesis is a process attributed to progressive genomic changes that alter the hepatocellular phenotype producing cellular intermediates that evolve into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). During the preneoplastic phase, the liver is often the site of chronic hepatitis and/or cirrhosis, and these conditions induce liver regeneration with accelerated hepatocyte cycling in an organ that is otherwise proliferatively at rest. Hepatocyte regeneration is accelerated by upregulation of mitogenic pathways involving molecular and genetic mechanisms.

Huntington's disease is caused by a gain-of-function neurotoxic mutation in normally neuroprotective huntingtin. Sensitive assays are required to discriminate mutant huntingtin from wild-type huntingtin. We have developed a normalized 384-plate assay for determination of mutant and wild-type huntingtin.

Neoplastic spread after trauma: natural death or manslaughter?

We report an unusual death of a seemingly healthy 26-year-old man due to diffuse metastasization of adrenal paraganglioma caused by rupture of the primitive tumour with subsequent massive haemorrhage after a relatively minor trauma. Our report describes the results of forensic investigation and discusses the possible mechanisms of metastasization.

We report a rare case of ostial plication as a potential cause of sudden death. Very few reports and images are available in the specialized literature regarding this anomaly. Ostial plication may be a source of sudden death or cause of death when no other significant autopsy findings are present.

Fatal blunt injuries possibly resulting from sexual abuse of a calf: a case report.

We report a case of a calf-related fatality on a farm. The victim was a 60-year-old man who was possibly attempting to sexually approach the animal from behind when he was struck by it, sustaining fatal blunt injuries, mostly to the thorax. This case is reported because of its rarity and because of the particular circumstances of death.

These uncertainties could be overcome if each transgenic factor were replaced with a small molecule that either directly activated its expression from the somatic genome or in some way compensated for its activity.

Expression and localization of augmenter of liver regeneration in human muscle tissue.

Mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA) disorders and abnormal regulation of nuclear-derived proteins devoted to the cross-talk between the two cellular genomes have recently interested researchers in the field of neuromuscular diseases. We have identified, isolated and sequenced a new gene, augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR) that stimulates in vivo hepatocyte proliferation and up-regulates mt-DNA expression and ATP production. ALR protein (Alrp) is mainly located, in rat, in the mitochondrial inter-membrane space and its mRNA is particularly abundant in brain, muscle, testis and liver, tissues whose activity is mostly dependent on mitochondrial metabolism.

Protective effect of augmenter of liver regeneration on hydrogen peroxide-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells.

Background: Hydrogen peroxide, as other reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during redox processes, induces lipid membrane peroxidation and protein degeneration causing cell apoptosis. ROS are recently considered as messengers in cell signalling processes, which, through reversible protein disulphide bridges formation, activate regulatory factors of cell proliferation and apoptosis. Disulphide bridges formation is catalysed by sulphydryl oxidase enzymes.

Hypoplastic coronary artery disease causing sudden death. Report of two cases and review of the literature.

Congenital coronary anomalies represent a condition often unrecognized in the living and in the dead. Investigating this condition is relevant for both clinicians and pathologists in order to identify potentially unrecognized coronary causes of sudden death. Hypoplastic coronary artery disease (HCAD) is a rare congenital abnormality reported to be associated with sudden death.

Homicide by heart attack?

We report here the case of a 53-year-old man who suddenly fell to the ground after being involved in a physical aggression by two younger men. Forensic autopsy revealed no significant injury except for slight, pale abrasions on the face. There were extensive signs of hypertensive and severe coronary artery atherosclerosis, corresponding to the data available from clinical history.

Acute intoxication by triazolam and promazine: a case report.

A fatality due to ingestion of triazolam and promazine is reported. Triazolam is a benzodiazepine widely prescribed as a hypnotic drug for the treatment of sleep disorders. Promazine is a neuroleptic drug.

It has been proposed that human embryonic stem cells could be used to provide an inexhaustible supply of differentiated cell types for the study of disease processes. Although methods for differentiating embryonic stem cells into specific cell types have become increasingly sophisticated, the utility of the resulting cells for modeling disease has not been determined. We have asked whether specific neuronal subtypes produced from human embryonic stem cells can be used to investigate the mechanisms leading to neural degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Delayed rupture of thoracic aorta aneurysm following a kick to the abdomen.

Several theories have been proposed to explain the Blunt Traumatic Aortic Rupture (BTAR) because different mechanical forces act on the aorta, at anatomically susceptible sites, including shearing, torsion and stretching, but the origin, transduction and relative importance of these forces remain uncertain. We report a case of a 74-year-old man injured by a kick to the abdomen. After 2 days he felt chest pain paroxysm and weakness in his left leg.

Fatal injection of ranitidine: a case report.

Introduction: Ranitidine hydrochloride (Zantac), a histamine-2-receptor antagonist, is a widely used medication with an excellent safety record. Anaphylactic reaction to ranitidine is an extremely rare event and a related death has never been described in the literature.

Case Presentation: We present the clinical history, histological and toxicological data of a 51-year-old man with negative anamnesis for allergic events, who died suddenly after the intravenous administration of one phial of Zantac 50 mg prescribed as a routine post-surgical prophylaxis for stress ulcer.
