The Italian Consensus for the Classification and Reporting of Thyroid Cytology (ICCRTC) has been successfully used in Italian healthcare since 2014, showing high reliability in classifying indeterminate thyroid nodules.
A study conducted at S. Andrea Hospital in Rome analyzed 157 indeterminate thyroid lesions, resulting in a 33.3% cancer rate among those that were surgically examined.
Significant differences in cancer rates were found between classified nodules, with Tir 3A showing a 4% cancer rate compared to 48% in Tir 3B, confirming the effectiveness of ICCRTC in identifying low and high-risk malignancies.
