Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected more than 762 million people to date and has caused approximately 7 million deaths all around the world, involving more than 187 countries. Although currently available vaccines show high efficacy in preventing severe respiratory complications in infected patients, the high number of mutations in the S proteins of the current variants is responsible for the high level of immune evasion and transmissibility of the virus and the reduced effectiveness of acquired immunity. In this scenario, the development of safe and effective drugs of synthetic or natural origin to suppress viral replication and treat acute forms of COVID-19 remains a valid therapeutic challenge.

Background: In the postharvest handling of horticultural commodities, plant extracts with fungicidal activity are a valid alternative to synthetic fungicides. The fungicidal activity of myrtle leaf extracts from eight cultivars was studied in vitro against Penicillium digitatum, Penicillium italicum, and Penicillium expansum and on artificially inoculated mandarins with green and blue molds during storage for 12 days at 20 °C and 90% RH.

Pomace seed extract loaded vesicles were prepared as promising technological and green solution to exploit agri-food wastes and by-products, and develop high value-added products for human health. In this study, the metabolome of an economically and ecologically important marine bivalve species widely distributed in the Mediterranean region, was characterized by using proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (¹H-NMR) spectroscopy. Significant seasonal variations in the content of carbohydrates and free amino acids were observed. In this study, the active components of grape pomaces were first extracted by maceration in ethanol and propylene glycol, then in extra virgin olive oil. The main components of the hydrophilic extractive solutions were flavonoids, while monounsaturated fatty acids were the most abundant constituents of the extractive oil, with high levels of oleic acid, which were identified by HPLC/DAD and GC/MS, respectively. The hydrophilic extractive solutions and the lipophilic extractive oil were used to prepare phospholipid vesicles, avoiding the energetically and economically expensive steps required to obtain solid matrixes or pure compounds.

Organocatalyzed Michael addition reactions of 2-(arylthio)cyclobutanones with trans-β-nitrostyrenes have been carried out using a bifunctional thiourea-primary amine catalyst, providing diastereoisomerically and enantiomerically enriched 2-alkyl-2-(arylthio)cyclobutanones having two contiguous stereocenters of which one is a chiral quaternary center. The absolute configuration of these novel adducts was assigned by X-ray diffraction analysis and a transition-state model is proposed to explain the observed stereoselectivities.
