Air pollution represents one of the major concerns worldwide, fueled by the increasing urbanization and related PM production worsening air quality in open air as well as in confined environments. In the present work, exposure to atmospheric metal pollution was investigated in 20 paired indoor (I)-outdoor (O) sites located in two urban areas of Italy and Belgium, by chemical (ICP-MS) and magnetic (saturation isothermal remanent magnetization, SIRM) analyses of Hypnum cupressiforme moss exposed in bags. After 12 weeks, the elemental profiles of the moss material exposed in the two countries largely overlapped, except for some elements which specifically accumulated in Belgium (Ag, As, Cd, Mo, Pb and Sb) and in Italy (Ca, Mg, Co, Cr, Sr, Ti and U).

Male breast cancer (BCa) is a rare disease accounting for less than 1% of all breast cancers and 1% of all cancers in males. The clinical management is largely extrapolated from female BCa. Several multigene assays are increasingly used to guide clinical treatment decisions in female BCa, however, there are limited data on the utility of these tests in male BCa.

Altering the human epigenome with gene-editing technology in attempt to treat a variety of diseases and conditions seems scientifically feasible. We explore some of the ethical and regulatory issues related to the clinical translation of human epigenetic editing arguing that such approaches should be considered akin to somatic therapies.

Monoclonal antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 are a clinically validated therapeutic option against COVID-19. Because rapidly emerging virus mutants are becoming the next major concern in the fight against the global pandemic, it is imperative that these therapeutic treatments provide coverage against circulating variants and do not contribute to development of treatment-induced emergent resistance. To this end, we investigated the sequence diversity of the spike protein and monitored emergence of virus variants in SARS-COV-2 isolates found in COVID-19 patients treated with the two-antibody combination REGEN-COV, as well as in preclinical in vitro studies using single, dual, or triple antibody combinations, and in hamster in vivo studies using REGEN-COV or single monoclonal antibody treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • - The COVID-19 pandemic has caused surgery delays for cancer patients to reduce exposure and save resources, negatively affecting their treatment.
  • - A review of multiple studies found that delays of over 4 weeks in certain cancers, like breast and ovarian cancer, significantly decreased survival rates, while delays over 3 months worsened outcomes for others like colorectal cancer and melanoma.
  • - However, some cancers, including gastric and advanced melanoma, showed no significant difference in outcomes with surgical delays, indicating variability in how different cancer types respond to timing of surgeries.

We study the relation between stochastic thermodynamics and nonequilibrium thermodynamics by evaluating the entropy production and the relation between fluxes and forces in a harmonic system with N particles in contact with N different reservoirs. We suppose that the system is in a nonequilibrium stationary state in a first phase and we study the relaxation to equilibrium in a second phase. During this relaxation, we can identify the linear relation between fluxes and forces satisfying the Onsager reciprocity and we obtain a nonlinear expression for the entropy production.

Purpose: Patients with cancer frequently encounter financial hardship, yet systematic strategies to identify at-risk patients are not established in care delivery. We assessed sensitivity of distress-based screening to identify patients with cancer-related financial hardship and associated care delivery outcomes.

Methods: A survey of 225 patients at a large cancer center assessed cancer-related financial hardship (0-10 Likert scale; highest quintile scores ≥ 5 defined severe hardship).

During the last years there has been an increasing availability of drugs (biologics and small molecules) with different mechanisms of action (MoA) in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). New issues about treatment strategies have arisen. The main aim of this study is to verify if there is a difference in terms of clinical efficacy (i.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a vasculitis of unknown origin of small and medium caliber blood vessels, especially involving coronary arteries and is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in childhood in developed countries. Although rarely, it can recur: most recurrences occur within 2 years of the initial episode. No data are available on incidence of recurrent KD in Europe and multiple recurrences are rarely seen.

Purpose: Prior studies have reported differing results regarding the association between endocrine therapy (ET) in the treatment of breast cancer and dementia risk. However, existing findings may be limited by common sources of bias and confounding. Here we investigate the association of ET utilized in the definitive setting to treat non-metastatic breast cancer with dementia risk accounting for multiple potential sources of bias and confounding.

One of the most challenging tasks for network operators is implementing accurate per-packet monitoring, looking for signs of performance degradation, security threats, and so on. Upon critical event detection, corrective actions must be taken to keep the network running smoothly. Implementing this mechanism requires the analysis of packet streams in a real-time (or close to) fashion.

Background: Breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma is a rare disease with a favourable prognosis if adequately treated. Same staged patients have usually a similar prognosis and outcomes, but in our experience, IIA-staged patients have a wider prognosis with outcomes that vary from complete disease response to death. This study aimed to understand and identify all the factors that could influence the prognosis of this group of patients and verify if their prognosis matches the stage they belong to.

Article Synopsis
  • Trastuzumab is the only approved targeted therapy for patients with HER2-amplified metastatic gastric cancer (GC), but it only provides long-term benefits for a small number of patients.
  • A study was conducted to test various HER2-targeted treatments in gastric cancer tumors with high HER2 amplification, using patient-derived xenografts.
  • The results showed that combining trastuzumab with other treatments like pertuzumab or lapatinib resulted in significantly better responses, suggesting that a stronger therapeutic approach could benefit patients with HER2-driven gastric tumors despite some previous clinical trial failures.

Background & Aims: About 15% of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas (iCCAs) express fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) fusion proteins (FFs), usually alongside mutational inactivation of TP53, CDKN2A or BAP1. In FFs, FGFR2 residues 1-768 fuse to sequences encoded by a diverse array of partner genes (>60) causing oncogenic FF activation. While FGFR-specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors (F-TKI) provide clinical benefit in FF iCCA, responses are partial and/or limited by resistance mechanisms, such as the V565F substitution in the FGFR2 gatekeeper residue.
