Utilization of the propensity score method: an exploratory comparison of proxy-completed to self-completed responses in the Medicare Health Outcomes Survey.

Background: This research examined the use of the propensity score method to compare proxy-completed responses to self-completed responses in the first three baseline cohorts of the Medicare Health Outcomes Survey, administered in 1998, 1999, and 2000, respectively. A proxy is someone other than the respondent who completes the survey for the respondent.

Methods: The propensity score method of matched sampling was used to compare proxy and self-completed responses.

No evidence of GABRG2 mutations in severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy.

Severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy (SMEI) has been long suspected to have a genetic origin. Recently mutations in the gene encoding a voltage-gated alpha-1 sodium channel subunit-SCN1A-have been identified as a common cause of SMEI. Moreover, a mutation in the gene encoding the gamma2 subunit of the GABA(A) receptor-GABRG2-has been described in a GEFS+ family with a member affected by SMEI.

Diagnostic imaging in 13 cases of Rasmussen's encephalitis: can early MRI suggest the diagnosis?

Rasmussen's encephalitis (RE) is a rare, progressive, chronic encephalitis characterised by drug-resistant epilepsy, progressive hemiparesis and mental impairment. It typically involves only one cerebral hemisphere, which becomes atrophic. We present neuroradiological findings in 13 children with RE.

Rasmussen's encephalitis: early characteristics allow diagnosis.

Objective: To identify early manifestations of Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) that can prompt early and reasonably secure diagnosis, allowing medical or surgical therapies at an early stage when they may be more effective in slowing the disease.

Methods: The authors studied 12 patients with clinical and neuropathologic diagnosis of RE, followed from disease onset, assessing clinical history, imaging, and EEG and focusing on early characteristics. Anti-GluR3 antibody assays were also considered in 11 patients.

Rationale: A growing literature suggests that excessive temporal discounting of delayed rewards may be a contributing factor in the etiology of substance abuse problems. Little is known, however, about how drug deprivation may affect temporal discounting of delayed rewards by drug-dependent individuals.

Objective: To examine the extent to which opioid deprivation affects how opioid-dependent individuals discount small, medium and large quantities of delayed heroin and money.

Diheteroarylethenes as thermally stable photoswitchable acceptors in photochromic fluorescence resonance energy transfer (pcFRET).

We have employed diheteroarylethenes as acceptors for photochromic FRET (pcFRET), a technique introduced for the quantitative determination of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In pcFRET, the fluorescent emission of the donor is modulated by cyclical transformations of a photochromic acceptor. Light induces a reversible change in the structure and, concomitantly, in the absorption properties of the acceptor.

Behavioral economics of human drug self-administration: progressive ratio versus random sequences of response requirements.

Progressive-ratio (PR) schedules have been used widely to examine the relationship between drug consumption and drug price (i.e. demand curves) in the study of the behavioral economics of drug abuse.

Synthesis of new N,N-disubstituted 4-amino-5,6-dihydro-3-phenyl-2H-thieno[2,3-h]-1-benzopyran-2-ones.

The synthesis of some N,N-disubstituted 4-amino-5,6-dihydro-3-phenyl-2H-thieno[2,3-h]-1-benzopyran-2-ones (4a-f), by reaction of phenylchloroketene with a series of N,N-disubstituted (E)-5-aminomethylene-6,7-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophen-4(5)-ones, followed by dehydrochlorination in situ of the primary adducts with DBN, is described. A moderate local anaesthetic activity was observed in the title compounds, particularly in 4e.

Prostaglandin E2 signalling pathway in human T lymphocytes from healthy and conjunctiva basal cell carcinoma-bearing subjects.

Prostaglandin E-induced signal transduction pathways in human T cells from healthy and uveal melanoma-bearing subjects were studied. Transfection experiments showed that PGE2 was able to phosphorylate and activate the fusion trans-activator of the cAMP responsive element-binding protein (CREB). Phosphorylation was at least partially mediated by protein kinase A, as evidenced by the effects of specific kinase inhibitors.

Sensitivity of nicotine-containing and de-nicotinized cigarette consumption to alternative non-drug reinforcement: a behavioral economic analysis.

A previous report from our laboratory showed similar measures of reinforcing efficacy for nicotine-containing and de-nicotinized cigarettes when each cigarette type was presented alone. The present experiment further compared the reinforcing efficacy of nicotine-containing and de-nicotinized cigarettes by assessing the effects of alternative non-drug reinforcement on self-administration of both cigarette types. Eight human subjects responded on a progressive-ratio schedule in which the number of plunger pulls required for standardized cigarette puffs increased across sessions.

3-Arylsulphonyl-5-arylamino-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2(3H)ones as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents.

Two series of 3-arylsulphonyl-5-arylamino-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2(3H)ones 2 with potential anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity were prepared and tested. Pharmacological results revealed that all the title compounds, endowed with an arylsulphonyl side chain, possess good antalgic activity and fair anti-inflammatory properties. The analgesic profile of the two series, evaluated by the acetic acid writhing test, showed that compounds 2c, 2f and 2h, in particular, were the most active.

Identification of defect sites on MgO(100) thin films by decoration with Pd atoms and studying CO adsorption properties.

CO adsorption on Pd atoms deposited on MgO(100) thin films has been studied by means of thermal desorption (TDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies. CO desorbs from the adsorbed Pd atoms at a temperature of about 250 K, which corresponds to a binding energy, E(b), of about 0.7 +/- 0.

Seckel's syndrome and malformations of cortical development: report of three new cases and review of the literature.

Seckel's syndrome is a rare form of primordial dwarfism, characterized by peculiar facial appearance. In the past, this condition was overdiagnosed, and most attention was given to the facial and skeletal features to define more precise diagnostic criteria. The presence of mental retardation and neurologic signs is one of the peculiar features of this syndrome, but only recently were rare cases of malformation of cortical development described, as documented by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Surgery of otosclerosis in the elderly.

Auditory results following stapes surgery in 26 patients with otosclerosis >60 years of age at the time of surgery were compared with those obtained in 140 patients <60 years undergoing stapes surgery during the same time period. Stapedotomy was performed in all cases. The mean follow-up period was 29 months.

Utilization of air medical transport in a large urban environment: a retrospective analysis.

Objective: To determine the utility of air medical transport in a large urban environment.

Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of all air medical transports of patients in the Fire Department of the City of New York EMS (emergency medical services) Command for the period of January 1, 1996, to December 31, 1999. These data were evaluated for frequency of air medical transport, patient condition at time of flight, and necessity of air evacuation.

In recent years, thanks to improved biocompatibility of the materials on the market, prostheses have been increasingly used in the partial or total ossicular chain reconstruction. The present study evaluates auditory ossicle reconstruction as a result of partial or total atrophy of the incus, comparing the use of the remodeled autologous incus with the use of partial hydroxyapatite prostheses (PORP).

General practitioners and mammographic screening uptake: influence of different modalities of general practitioner participation. Working Group.

Aims And Background: To compare the impact of different modalities of general practitioner (GP) involvement, including the introduction of target payments, on the attendance rate of organized population-based screening programs for breast cancer in Italy.

Study Design: The study was conducted between 1994 and 1996 in four Italian cities where mammographic screening programs are active: Caltanissetta (CL), Firenze (FI), Modena (MO) and Torino (TO). The impact on attendance rate of different invitation strategies based on active GP involvement was tested in each center.
