Background: Recently, several devices exploiting the near-infrared autofluorescence (NIR-AF) of parathyroid glands (PGs) have been developed. Nevertheless, their impact on both preserving PGs from inadvertent surgical dissection and on post-surgical hypoparathyroidism (hypoPTH) is controversial.
Methods: A retrospective study of 845 patients undergoing thyroid surgery in 2 academic tertiary centres was conducted.
The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are incurable pediatric neurodegenerative diseases characterized by accumulation of lysosomal material and dysregulation of autophagy. Given the promising results of treatment with trehalose, an autophagy inducer, in cell and animal models of NCL, we conducted an open-label, non-placebo-controlled, non-randomized 12-month prospective study in NCL patients receiving oral trehalose (4 g/day). All were treated with a commercially available formulation for 6 months, followed by a 6-month washout.

CLN6-related NCLs include both late-infantile and adult myoclonic form. We report a 21-year-old patient, with mild developmental delay, who developed occipital seizures at 14 years, and subsequently cognitive decline, cortical myoclonus, and photosensitivity at low and higher frequencies.

The mucosa consists of epithelial cells connected by cellular junctions that regulate the passage of nutrients covered by a mucus layer that plays an important role in host-microbiome interactions. Mimicking the intestinal mucosa for assays, particularly the generation of a mucus layer, has proven to be challenging.

Fifty patients who underwent minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) from March 2021 to April 2024 were enrolled. MIPs utilised both NIFI and ioPTH, comparing the time to adenoma excision with NIFI against the total surgical time, including ioPTH measurement wait time.

We used data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. In 2017, HCAHPS performance was somewhat better for non-VA than for VA hospitals, with Care Transition being the only measure for which VA hospitals performed better on average.

The algorithm detects the electromyographic (EMG) onset and infers the direction of the movement during reaching tasks to control a powered shoulder-elbow exoskeleton. Features related to muscle synergies are used in a Gaussian Mixture Model and probability accumulation-based logic to infer the user's movement direction.

Recent advances in synthesis techniques yield InP-based QDs with optical properties comparable to those of benchmark Cd-based QDs, making InP-based QDs viable alternatives to toxic Cd-based QDs for applications such as quantum dot LEDs (QLEDs). However, QLEDs typically suffer from a loss of luminescence over time due to exposure of the QDs to ambient air. To avoid this, state-of-the-art hybrid barrier layers are explored consisting of alternating organic/inorganic layers.

Methods: In this observational and single-centered study, a prospective evaluation of several biochemical and anthropometrical parameters, weight loss, handgrip strength, visual analogue scale of appetite, questionnaires associated with malnutrition & quality of life and body composition (obtained by Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis) was performed before and after high-dose cisplatin chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy in 60 patients affected by head and neck cancer. Oral nutritional supplements were used to reach the correct number of daily calories and proteins.
Anhedonia induced by sustained stress exposure is a hallmark symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD) and in rodents, it can be accessed through the sucrose preference test (SPT). (R)-ketamine is a fast-acting antidepressant with less detrimental side effects and abuse liability compared to racemic ketamine. The present study combined high-throughput proteomics and network analysis to identify molecular mechanisms involved in chronic variable stress (CVS)-induced anhedonia and promising targets underlying (R)-ketamine rapid antidepressant response.

Transient abnormal myelopoiesis is a syndrome that causes excess proliferation of immature myeloid cells and occurs in 10% to 15% of neonates with trisomy 21. Transient abnormal myelopoiesis usually resolves spontaneously but occasionally requires treatment with chemotherapy. The disorder is not typically associated with eosinophilia.

Using both density functional theory (DFT+U) simulations and experiments, we show that the incorporation of an ordered array of oxygen-vacancies in a perovskite oxide can lead to enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER). As a benchmark, LaCoO was investigated, where the incorporation of oxygen-vacancies led to LaCoO (LaCoO), featuring a structural transformation. DFT+U simulations demonstrated the effect of oxygen-vacancies on lowering the potential required to achieve negative Gibbs Free Energy for all steps of the OER mechanism.

However, some difficulties were detected in sentinel lymph node (SLN) identification in floor of mouth (FOM) and ventral tongue tumors because of the so-called "shine-through radioactivity" of the injection site, which may mask nodal hotspots in proximity. We assessed the feasibility and the potential strengths of combining Tc-Tilmanocept with indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence lympho-angiography in a dedicated multimodal protocol for SLNB in T1/T2N0 oral cancer to evaluate the synergistic role of each of these two tracers in providing the appropriate sensitivity and ease of learning, even in such a critical anatomical subsite.

Background: The interplay between cancer cells and the immune system is crucial in cancer progression and treatment. In this regard, the tumor immune microenvironment and macroenvironment, marked by systemic inflammation markers and TILs, could be considered key prognostic factors in tumors, including oral and lung squamous cell carcinoma.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective clinical study on patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) and Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma (LUSCC), examining stages, comorbidities, treatments, and outcomes.
Background: Low response rates (RRs) can affect hospitals' data collection costs for patient experience surveys and value-based purchasing eligibility. Most hospitals use single-mode approaches, even though sequential mixed mode (MM) yields higher RRs and perhaps better patient representativeness. Some hospitals may be reluctant to incur MM's potential additional cost and complexity without knowing how much RRs would increase.
