Article Synopsis
  • A three-year field trial compared the use of highly stabilized digestate from sewage sludge with synthetic mineral fertilizers (SF) for maize crops, focusing on nitrogen (N) management.
  • Despite higher levels of organic N from digestate (RF), soil nitrate levels at one meter depth were similar across RF, SF, and unfertilized plots, indicating no increased nitrate leaching from the digestate.
  • Although RF showed higher denitrification activity and similar ammonia emissions compared to SF, the addition of organic matter in RF may have enhanced denitrification efficiency, contributing to carbon accumulation in the soil over the three-year period.

Conservation biology is a mission-driven discipline that must navigate a new relationship between conservation and science. Because conservation is a social and political as well as an ecological project, conservation biologists must practice interdisciplinarity and collaboration. In a comparative study of 7 cases (Jaguars in the Chaco, Grevy's zebra in Kenya, Beekeeping in Tanzania, Andean cats in Argentina, Jaguars in Mexico, Lobster fishing, and Black bears in Mexico), we examined motivations for collaboration in conservation, who can collaborate in conservation, and how conservation professionals can work well together.

The GIMEMA phase II LLC1518 VERITAS trial investigated the efficacy and safety of front-line, fixed-duration venetoclax and rituximab (VenR) in combination in young (≤65 years), fit patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and unmutated IGHV and/or TP53 disruption. Treatment consisted of the venetoclax ramp-up, six monthly courses of the VenR combination, followed by six monthly courses of venetoclax as a single agent. A centralized assessment of minimal residual disease (MRD) was performed by allele-specific oligonucleotide polymerase chain reaction assay on the peripheral blood and bone marrow at the end of treatment (EOT) and during the follow-up.

Aims: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, requiring novel therapeutic and lifestyle interventions. Metabolic alterations and energy production deficit are hallmarks and thereby promising therapeutic targets for this complex clinical syndrome. We aim to study the molecular mechanisms and effects on cardiac function in rodents with HFrEF of a designer diet in which free essential amino acids-in specifically designed percentages-substituted for protein.

Introduction: Overweight and obesity are highly prevalent conditions associated with premature morbidity and mortality worldwide. Capsiate, a nonpungent analogue of capsaicin, binds to TRP vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) receptor, which is involved in adipogenesis, and could be effective as a weight-lowering agent.

Methods: Eighteen slightly overweight women were enrolled in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) is a commonly used tool to assess lower extremity function, composed of three assessments (standing balance, gait speed, and chair stand). While its validity for group-level decisions has been positively demonstrated, the measurement precision at the individual level needs more clarification. We aimed to examine the SPPB's psychometric characteristics including its conditional measurement precision with Rasch methods in a sample of elderly patients admitted to cardiac rehabilitation.

Targeting bromodomain-containing protein 9 (BRD9) represents a promising strategy for the development of new agents endowed with anticancer properties. With this aim, a set of 2,4,5-trisubstituted-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-one-based compounds was investigated following a combined approach that relied on in silico studies, chemical synthesis, biophysical and biological evaluation of the most promising items. The protocol was initially based on molecular docking experiments, accounting a library of 1896 potentially synthesizable items tested in silico against the bromodomain of BRD9.

In this commentary, using existing clinical trial data and FDA approvals we propose that there is currently a critical need for an appropriate balancing between the financial impact of new cancer drugs and their actual benefit for patients. By adopting "pleural mesothelioma" as our clinical model we summarize the most relevant pertinent and available literature on this topic, and use an analysis of the reliability of the trials submitted for registration and/or recently published as a case in point to raise concerns with respect to appropriate trial design, biomarker based stratification and to highlight the ongoing need for balancing the benefit/cost ratio for both patients and healthcare providers.

Background: Mesothelioma is an aggressive disease with limited therapeutic options. The growth factor progranulin plays a critical role in several cancer models, where it regulates tumor initiation and progression. Recent data from our laboratories have demonstrated that progranulin and its receptor, EphA2, constitute an oncogenic pathway in bladder cancer by promoting motility, invasion and in vivo tumor formation.

Epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity (EMP) refers to the ability of cells to dynamically interconvert between epithelial (E) and mesenchymal (M) phenotypes, thus generating an array of hybrid E/M intermediates with mixed E and M features. Recent findings have demonstrated how these hybrid E/M rather than fully M cells play key roles in most of physiological and pathological processes involving EMT. To this regard, the onset of hybrid E/M state coincides with the highest stemness gene expression and is involved in differentiation of either normal and cancer stem cells.

Background: A growing number of patients taking antiplatelet drugs, mainly low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) (75-150 mg/day), for primary or secondary prevention of thrombotic events, are encountered in every field of surgery. While the bleeding risk due to the continuation of these medications during the perioperative period has been adequately investigated in several surgical specialties, in thyroid surgery it still needs to be clarified. The main aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of cervical haematoma in patients receiving low-dose acetylsalicylic acid, specifically ASA 100 mg/day, during the perioperative period of thyroidectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system, where immune cell migration plays a key role in its progression.
  • The study focused on ninjurin2 (NINJ2), a plasma membrane protein linked to MS relapse under certain treatments, and examined its role in inflammation and monocyte movement through the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
  • Results showed that NINJ2 levels changed in response to inflammation; it was lower in monocytes but higher in brain endothelial cells after stimulation, and there was a higher rate of monocyte migration from MS patients compared to healthy individuals, suggesting NINJ2 is significant for immune cell transmigration during inflammation.
