In this work, we theoretically investigate a graphene/silicon Schottky photodetector operating at 1550 nm whose performance is enhanced by interference phenomena occurring inside an innovative Fabry-Pèrot optical microcavity. The structure consists of a hydrogenated amorphous silicon/graphene/crystalline silicon three-layer realized on the top of a double silicon-on-insulator substrate working as a high-reflectivity input mirror. The detection mechanism is based on the internal photoemission effect, and the light-matter interaction is maximized through the concept of confined mode, exploited by embedding the absorbing layer within the photonic structure.

In this work, we investigate a vertically illuminated near-infrared photodetector based on a graphene layer physically embedded between a crystalline and a hydrogenated silicon layer. Under near-infrared illumination, our devices show an unforeseen increase in the thermionic current. This effect has been ascribed to the lowering of the graphene/crystalline silicon Schottky barrier as the result of an upward shift in the graphene Fermi level induced by the charge carriers released from traps localized at the graphene/amorphous silicon interface under illumination.

Incidental memory can be challenged by increasing either the retention delay or the memory load. The dorsal hippocampus (dHP) appears to help with both consolidation from short-term (STM) to long-term memory (LTM), and higher memory loads, but the mechanism is not fully understood. Here we find that female mice, despite having the same STM capacity of 6 objects and higher resistance to distraction in our different object recognition task (DOT), when tested over 1 h or 24 h delays appear to transfer to LTM only 4 objects, whereas male mice have an STM capacity of 6 objects in this task.

Zinc oxide nanowires (ZnONWs) are largely used in biosensing applications due to their large specific surface area, photoluminescence emission and electron mobility. In this work, the surfaces of ZnONWs are modified by covalent bioconjugation of a peptidic nucleic acid (PNA) probe whose sequence is properly chosen to recognize a complementary DNA (cDNA) strand corresponding to a tract of the CD5 mRNA, the main prognostic marker of chronic lymphatic leukemia. The interaction between PNA and cDNA is preliminarily investigated in solution by circular dichroism, CD melting, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Bio-synthetic scaffolds of interspersed poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and gelatin (GEL) fibers are fabricated by co-electrospinning. Tailored PLLA/GEL compositions are obtained and GEL crosslinking with genipin provides for the maintenance of good fiber morphology. Scaffold tensile mechanical properties are intermediate between those of pure PLLA and GEL and vary as a function of PLLA content.

Stable chains of carbon-based nanoparticles were formed directly in polymer matrixes through an electrode-free approach. Spontaneous surface charges were generated pyroelectrically onto functionalized ferroelectric crystals, enabling the formation of electric field gradients that triggered the dipole-dipole interactions responsible for the alignment of the particles, while embedded in the polymer solution. The phenomenon is similar to the dielectrophoretic alignment of carbon nanotubes reported in the literature.

The sarcoglycan complex, consisting of α-, β-, γ-, δ- and ε-sarcoglycans, is a multimember transmembrane system providing a mechanosignaling connection from the cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. An optical phase array with tunable phase step is demonstrated. The phase array consists of a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice of inverted ferroelectric domains fabricated on a Z-cut lithium niobate substrate. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare risk factors for coronary atherosclerosis in children with a family history of unheralded myocardial infarction or uncomplicated stable angina.

Background: In patients with unheralded myocardial infarction, coronary atherosclerosis might have a greater tendency to cause acute coronary occlusion than in patients with uncomplicated stable angina, suggesting the possibility of different risk factors in these two groups of patients.

Methods: Serum lipid levels were compared in children with a family history of unheralded myocardial infarction (236 children) or uncomplicated stable angina (48 children) or no family history of ischemic heart disease (613 children).
