In vitro activity of oral cephalosporins against pediatric isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae non-susceptible to penicillin, amoxicillin or erythromycin.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of penicillin, amoxicillin or erythromycin resistance on the in vitro activity of oral cephalosporins against Streptococcus pneumoniae pediatric isolates. A total of 282 pediatric isolates received during 2005 in the Spanish Reference Pneumococcal Laboratory were tested by agar dilution: 104 strains were penicillin-susceptible, 72 intermediate, and 106 resistant. Serotypes 9 and 14 were the most troublesome with <10% susceptibility to oral cephalosporins.

Efficacy of cefditoren in the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections: a pooled analysis of six clinical trials.

Methods: Studies were prospective, comparative, multicentre and randomised. Comparators were penicillin V (pharyngitis) and cefuroxime or amoxicillin/clavulanate (sinusitis).

One-solvent extraction of astaxanthin from lactic acid fermented shrimp wastes.

Free astaxanthin one-solvent extractions with ethanol, acetone, and liquid 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane from raw and lactic acid fermented (ensilaged) shrimp residues were investigated. The total carotenoid recovery from ensilaged shrimp wastes was higher than that from non-ensilaged ones as assessed by HPLC analyses. Acetone gave the highest extraction yields of free astaxanthin with up to 115 microg/g of material.

Bilateral popliteal aneurysm as a result of vascular type IV entrapment in a young patient: a report of an exceptional case.

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is recognized as a cause of claudication and arterial occlusion in young patients. Aneurysmal degeneration is a reported but rare complication. We present the case of a young male patient with large bilateral popliteal aneurysms due to symptomatic anatomic entrapment.

Ex vivo effects of lysine clonixinate on cyclooxygenases in rat lung and stomach preparations.

Lysine clonixinate (LC) is an anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic and analgesic drug with minor digestive side effects, which might suggest a weak COX-1 inhibitor. The aim of this study focused on ex vivo effects of LC 40 mg/kg ip and indomethacin (INDO) 10 mg/kg ip in lung and stomach preparations of control rats and LPS-treated rats (5 mg/kg ip). The non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs were administered concomitantly, following three hours and before one, two or three hours of LPS treatment.

The reaction in a 1 : 1 molar ratio with [Cu(NCMe)4]PF6 or Ag(OTf) complexes gives the mononuclear [CuL(NCMe)]PF6 (1), with crystallographic mirror symmetry, or dinuclear [Ag2(mu-L)2](OTf)2 (2) (OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) in which the ligand bridges both silver centres, an unprecedented mode of coordination for this type of ligands.
