Existing swallowing evaluation methods using X-ray or endoscopy are qualitative. The present study develops a swallowing monitoring and assessment system (SMAS) that is nonintrusive and quantitative. The SMAS comprises an ultrasonic Doppler sensor array, a microphone, and an inertial measurement unit to measure ultrasound signals originating only from swallowing activities.

Wearable pressure sensors with wide operating pressure ranges and enhanced wearability via seamless integration with circuits can greatly improve the fields of digital healthcare, prosthetic limbs, and human-machine interfaces. Herein, we report an approach based on a conductive-island-bridging nanonetwork to realize wearable resistive pressure sensors that are operative over ultrawide pressure ranges >400 kPa and are circuit-compatible. The sensor has a simple two-layered structure, where nanonetworks of single-walled carbon nanotubes selectively patterned on a surface-modified elastomeric film interface and bridge conductive Au island patterns on printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Flexible piezoresistive sensors have huge potential for health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, prosthetic limbs, and intelligent robotics. A variety of nanomaterials and structural schemes have been proposed for realizing ultrasensitive flexible piezoresistive sensors. However, despite the success of recent efforts, high sensitivity within narrower pressure ranges and/or the challenging adhesion and stability issues still potentially limit their broad applications.

This study investigated the feasibility of the Infrared (IR) sensor-based walking aids for detecting the gait intention. To compensate for the defects of Force Sensing Resistors (FSRs) or force sensors, such as the velocity control problem on gait slopes, we used IR sensors to investigate knee joint anterior displacement in order to recognize the gait intention. We also measure leg muscle activities and foot pressure, in order to verify our investigation.
