Despite differences between Mother and Baby Units (MBUs) and other inpatient psychiatric settings, research has not yet explored the nature and value of compassionate care offered by MBU staff despite the increasing importance of compassion in healthcare. This novel study investigated the experience of compassionate care by fifteen mothers admitted to a MBU in England using the Repertory Grid Technique. Our findings indicated that these women perceived their MBU care as compassionate.

Background: Safe alternatives to custody for offenders with mental disorder are vital, not least as self-harm, and violence rates are rising among them in prisons. In England and Wales, the Criminal Justice Act 2003 allows a mental health treatment requirement (MHTR) to supplement a community or suspended prison sentence, but this combination is poorly understood and rarely sought.
Aim: To explore offenders' perspectives on the MHTR.
Laboratory column experiments and reactive transport modeling were performed to evaluate the reduction of nitrate and its effects on trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by granular iron. In addition to determining degradation kinetics of TCE in the presence of nitrate, the columns used in this study were equipped with electrodes which allowed for in situ measurements of corrosion potentials of the iron material. Together with Raman spectroscopic measurements the mechanisms of decline in iron reactivity were examined.

Both compounds were rapidly degraded, following pseudo-first-order kinetics with respect to the parent compounds. The average pseudo-first-order rate constants for CFC11 were similar among different materials, except for palladium-enhanced iron (PdFe), in which the rate of degradation was about two times faster than for the other materials.

Mood stabilisers are often used off-license for the treatment of aggression associated with a variety of psychiatric conditions, but their efficacy in these and in idiopathic aggression is not known.
Aims: To summarise and evaluate the evidence for the efficacy of mood stabilisers (anticonvulsants/lithium) in the treatment of impulsive or repetitive aggression in adults.
Long-term performance is a key consideration for the granular iron permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology because the economic benefit relies on sustainable operation for substantial periods of time. However, predictions on the long-term performance have been limited mainly because of the lack of reliable modeling tools. Using granular iron (Fe) and nickel-plated iron (Ni/Fe), this paper examines the effectiveness of these two types of reactive materials for the treatment of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), a common groundwater and soil contaminant at military facilities. RDX degraded very rapidly in the presence of both Fe and Ni/Fe in column and batch experiments. Enhancement by Ni/Fe did not prove to be effective as the half-lives of RDX ranged from 3 to 24 seconds and 3 to 11 seconds in the Fe and Ni/Fe columns, respectively.

Four iron materials (Connelly, Gotthart-Maier, Peerless, and ISPAT) were used for the column experiments, and the changes in reactivity toward cis-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) degradation in the presence of dissolved CaCO3 were evaluated. The experimental results showed that the difference in distribution of the accumulated precipitates, resulting from differences in iron corrosion rate, caused a difference in the migration rate of the cis-DCE profiles and a significant difference in the pattern of passivation, indicating a faster passivation in the region close to the influent end for the material having a higher corrosion rate.
