Optimizing photosynthetic light-harvesting under stars: simple and general antenna models.

In the next 10-20 years, several observatories will aim to detect the signatures of oxygenic photosynthesis on exoplanets, though targets must be carefully selected. Most known potentially habitable exo-planets orbit cool M-dwarf stars, which have limited emission in the photosynthetically active region of the spectrum (PAR, nm) used by Earth's oxygenic photoautotrophs. Still, recent experiments have shown that model cyanobacteria, algae, and non-vascular plants grow comfortably under simulated M-dwarf light, though vascular plants struggle.

Oscillatory-Quality of sleep spindles links brain state with sleep regulation and function.

Here, we characterized the dynamics of sleep spindles, focusing on their damping, which we estimated using a metric called oscillatory-Quality (o-Quality), derived by fitting an autoregressive model to electrophysiological signals, recorded from the cortex in mice. The o-Quality of sleep spindles correlates weakly with their amplitude, shows marked laminar differences and regional topography across cortical regions, reflects the level of synchrony within and between cortical networks, is strongly modulated by sleep-wake history, reflects the degree of sensory disconnection, and correlates with the strength of coupling between spindles and slow waves. As most spindle events are highly localized and not detectable with conventional low-density recording approaches, o-Quality thus emerges as a valuable metric that allows us to infer the spread and dynamics of spindle activity across the brain and directly links their spatiotemporal dynamics with local and global regulation of brain states, sleep regulation, and function.

Mixed shift rotations, sleep, burnout and well-being in professions similar to radiographers: A systematic review.

Introduction: Delivering 24 h healthcare requires rotational shift work from doctors and the medical imaging team, while contributing to safe and timely care of patients. Additional service pressure and staff shortfall leads to workload pressures, adjusted shift patterns and risk of burnout. Evidence should be sought to the effects of this work on staff.

Access, acceptance and adherence to cancer prehabilitation: a mixed-methods systematic review.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review is to better understand access to, acceptance of and adherence to cancer prehabilitation.

Methods: MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Embase, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, ProQuest Medical Library, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and grey literature were systematically searched for quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods studies published in English between January 2017 and June 2023. Screening, data extraction and critical appraisal were conducted by two reviewers independently using Covidence™ systematic review software.

Review: Crisis responses for children and young people - a systematic review of effectiveness, experiences and service organisation (CAMH-Crisis).

Background: In England, one in six children aged 5-19 has a probable diagnosable mental health disorder. This is a major public health problem, with multiple agencies adopting varying approaches to care delivery for children and young people (CYP) in crisis.

Objectives: To examine the organisation of crisis services across education, health, social care and voluntary sectors; the experiences and perceptions of CYP, families and staff; the effectiveness of current approaches to care and the goals of crisis intervention.

Quality, Costs, and Policy: Factors Influencing Choice of Anesthesia Staffing Models.

Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) can practice independently or with varying degrees of supervision by physicians or anesthesiologists. Before 2001, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) conditions of participation required CRNAs to be supervised by a physician. Starting in November 2001, CMS implemented an opt-out policy to give states greater autonomy in determining how anesthesia services are delivered.

The origin of RNA precursors on exoplanets.

Given that the macromolecular building blocks of life were likely produced photochemically in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) light, we identify some general constraints on which stars produce sufficient UV for this photochemistry. We estimate how much light is needed for the UV photochemistry by experimentally measuring the rate constant for the UV chemistry ("light chemistry", needed for prebiotic synthesis) versus the rate constants for the bimolecular reactions that happen in the absence of the UV light ("dark chemistry"). We make these measurements for representative photochemical reactions involving and HS.

Study Design: Claims data from a large insurer in the southeastern United States.

Methods: The sample consisted of individuals continuously enrolled for 2 years (2013-2014) who had Affordable Care Act-compliant plans in 2014.

Using the nominal group technique to involve young people in an evidence synthesis which explored 'risk' in inpatient mental healthcare.

Plain Language Summary: We conducted a review of research on the topic of 'risk' in hospital based mental health care for young people aged 11-18. We wanted to include a contribution from young people alongside other stakeholders with expertise to guide the research team in decisions made setting parameters for the review. To achieve this, we held a stakeholder group meeting.

Although tax credits were available to individuals who enrolled in qualified health plans (QHPs) beginning in 2014, many individuals chose not to switch plans. We examined characteristics associated with switching from a non-ACA compliant plan to a QHP in 2014 and, conditional on switching, the characteristics associated with selection of a specific plan level.

What do we know about the risks for young people moving into, through and out of inpatient mental health care? Findings from an evidence synthesis.

Background: Young people with complex or severe mental health needs sometimes require care and treatment in inpatient settings. There are risks for young people in this care context, and this study addressed the question: 'What is known about the identification, assessment and management of risk in young people (aged 11-18) with complex mental health needs entering, using and exiting inpatient child and adolescent mental health services in the UK?'

Methods: In phase 1 a scoping search of two electronic databases (MEDLINE and PsychINFO) was undertaken. Items included were themed and presented to members of a stakeholder advisory group, who were asked to help prioritise the focus for phase 2.

ViSQOLAudio: An objective audio quality metric for low bitrate codecs.

Streaming services seek to optimise their use of bandwidth across audio and visual channels to maximise the quality of experience for users. This letter evaluates whether objective quality metrics can predict the audio quality for music encoded at low bitrates by comparing objective predictions with results from listener tests. Three objective metrics were benchmarked: PEAQ, POLQA, and VISQOLAudio.

Despite its demonstrated effectiveness, colorectal cancer (CRC) testing is suboptimal, particularly in vulnerable populations such as those who are publicly insured. Prior studies provide an incomplete picture of the importance of the intersection of multilevel factors affecting CRC testing across heterogeneous geographic regions where vulnerable populations live. We examined CRC testing across regions of North Carolina by using population-based Medicare and Medicaid claims data from disabled individuals who turned 50 years of age during 2003-2008.

Social ecology of asthma: engaging stakeholders in integrating health behavior theories and practice-based evidence through systems mapping.

This article describes a process for integrating health behavior and social science theories with practice-based insights using participatory systems thinking and diagramming methods largely inspired by system dynamics methods. This integration can help close the gap between research and practice in health education and health behavior by offering a systematic approach to bring together stakeholders across multiple domains. In this process we create a diagram using constructs from multiple health behavior theories at all levels of the social ecological framework as variables in causal loop diagrams.
