Up to 30% of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who undergo chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy have evidence of response, although trials are highly heterogeneous. These responses are rarely deep or durable. CD123, CD33, and CLL-1 have emerged as the most common targets for CAR T cells in AML.

Lithium related thyroid and parathyroid disease: Updated clinical practice guidelines are needed.

Objective: This study aims to estimate the prevalence of and determine physician approaches to the screening and management of lithium-associated thyroid and parathyroid disorders in British Columbia, Canada.

Methods: Serum lithium and thyroid/parathyroid laboratory data were collected retrospectively for patients with lithium levels measured at seven BC hospitals between 2012 and 2021. A mail-out survey about screening and management of thyroid/parathyroid disorders in patients on lithium was sent to the ordering physicians of patients with abnormal results.

Correlation of CT perfusion with MRI brain in symptomatic carotid artery stenosis.

Background: Cerebral white matter disease and large vessel cerebral steno-occlusive are both associated with high incidence of strokes and mortality. There is a lack of literature correlating the cerebral perfusion downstream of a stenotic lesion with white matter changes in the cerebral hemispheres. The aim of this study was to correlate the white matter changes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with computed tomography (CT) perfusion parameters in patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis.

The Oral Microbiome and Cross-Kingdom Interactions during Pregnancy.

Pregnancy initiates a temporary transition in the maternal physiological state, with a shift in the oral microbiome and a potential increase in frequency of oral diseases. The risk of oral disease is higher among populations of Hispanic and Black women and those with lower socioeconomic status (low SES), demonstrating a need for intervention within these high-risk populations. To further our understanding of the oral microbiome of high-risk pregnant women, we characterized the oral microbiome in 28 nonpregnant and 179 pregnant low-SES women during their third trimester living in Rochester, New York.

The role of Gender in Operative Autonomy in orthopaedic Surgical Trainees (GOAST).

Aims: Global literature suggests that female surgical trainees have lower rates of independent operating (operative autonomy) than their male counterparts. The objective of this study was to identify any association between gender and lead/independent operating in speciality orthopaedic trainees within the UK national training programme.

Methods: This was a retrospective case-control study using electronic surgical logbook data from 2009 to 2021 for 274 UK orthopaedic trainees.

Repeatability and agreement of central corneal thickness measurements with a new handheld non-contact pachymeter.

Purpose: To compare the repeatability of central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements taken with a new handheld pachymeter (Occuity PM1 pachymeter) and to assess its agreement with ultrasound biometry and two commercially available optical biometers in participants with normal eyes.

Methods: Three consecutive CCT measurements of the right eye of 105 participants with normal corneas were acquired by the PM1 pachymeter, Lenstar LS 900 and Oculus Pentacam HR in a random order. This was followed by three measurements with a handheld ultrasound pachymeter (UP) (Pachmate 2).

In the last century, prescribing electroconvulsive therapy usually involved considering the relative merits of unilateral versus bilateral electroconvulsive therapy, with most other parameters fixed. However, research over the last 30 years has discovered that several parameters of the electroconvulsive therapy stimulus can have a significant impact on efficacy and cognitive side effects. The stimulus dose relative to seizure threshold was shown to significantly affect efficacy, especially for right unilateral electroconvulsive therapy, where suprathreshold doses in the vicinity of 5-6 times seizure threshold were far more efficacious than doses closer to threshold.

Intravenous tumor extension is a well-recognized phenomenon occurring in various malignancies but is a relatively rare entity in thyroid carcinoma. In patients with poorly differentiated thyroid cancer (pDTC), I-131 avid superior vena cava tumor (SVC) thrombus at initial presentation is infrequent and potential life threatening. Tumor thrombus can form either due to direct vascular extension of the primary mass or by hematogenous spread.

Real-world effectiveness of intensive chemotherapy with 7&3 versus venetoclax and hypomethylating agent in acute myeloid leukemia.

Intensive chemotherapy with cytarabine and anthracycline (7&3) remains the standard therapy for patients medically fit for induction, but the assessment of fitness remains controversial. Venetoclax and hypomethylating agent (ven/HMA) combination therapy has improved outcomes in unfit patients but no prospective study has assessed ven/HMA versus 7&3 as initial therapy in older, fit patients. Rectosigmoid Adenocarcinoma Presenting As Nine Days of Constipation.

We report the case of a 56-year-old male presenting with nine days of constipation and absence of flatus without any improvement and who had received conservative management after recent admission at an external hospital. Upon further investigation, the patient was diagnosed with rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma and was successfully surgically treated without any perioperative complications. This case highlights the importance of early detection and interventions necessary to prevent progression of colorectal adenocarcinoma.

This article summarises expert discussion on the management of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which took place during the 24th World Gastrointestinal Cancer Congress (WGICC) in Barcelona, July 2022. A multidisciplinary approach is mandatory to ensure an optimal diagnosis and staging of HCC, planning of curative and therapeutic options, including surgical, embolisation, ablative strategies, or systemic therapy. Furthermore, in many patients with HCC, underlying liver cirrhosis represents a challenge and influences the therapeutic options.

Clients' experiences on North America's first take-home injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT) program: a qualitative study.

Background: To support public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, oral opioid agonist treatment (OAT) take-home doses were expanded in Western countries with positive results. Injectable OAT (iOAT) take-home doses were previously not an eligible option, and were made available for the first time in several sites to align with public health measures. Building upon these temporary risk-mitigating guidelines, a clinic in Vancouver, BC continued to offer two of a possible three daily doses of take-home injectable medications to eligible clients.

Methods: Administrative healthcare databases were linked to generate a cohort of patients who were aged ≥40 years at their first claimed hearing amplification devices (HAD) between April 2007 and March 2016 through the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) (257,285 with claims and 1,005,010 controls).
