Protocol for the co-design of an online support service for adults with hearing loss.

Introduction: Untreated hearing loss is reported to negatively impact on an individual's quality of life, affecting their psychological and physical health and placing them at greater risk of developing dementia. Despite this, hearing loss management is often delayed by up to a decade. This is likely due to difficulties in navigating the hearing care pathway, and the absence of a central, unbiased reference point for consumer-friendly hearing health information and resources.

Severe measles with pneumonitis in an immunocompetent adult.

Measles is a highly contagious but vaccine-preventable airborne-transmitted viral infection of which there has been a recent resurgence of cases worldwide over the past year, including in countries such as the UK, which had previously successfully achieved endemic measles elimination through vaccination programmes. Measles is typically a self-limiting illness, but can rarely cause severe, life-threatening disease, particularly when complicated by respiratory or neurological involvement. These severe complications are not typically seen in the absence of immunosuppression.

How Cultural Practices Influence the Understanding and Emotional Intensity of Mexican Children's Memories of Death Events.

This study assessed whether a sample of 43 children in Puebla, Mexico would show the Fading Affect Bias (FAB) for memories of the death of loved ones or pets and for general negative memories. FAB is a phenomenon in which emotional intensity associated with unpleasant memories fades faster than affect in pleasant memories. Mexican children showed FAB across negative and death memories.

The hemodynamic response to co-occurring interictal epileptiform discharges and high-frequency oscillations localizes the seizure-onset zone.

Objective: To use intracranial electroencephalography (EEG) to characterize functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activation maps associated with high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) (80-250 Hz) and examine their proximity to HFO- and seizure-generating tissue.

Methods: Forty-five patients implanted with intracranial depth electrodes underwent a simultaneous EEG-fMRI study at 3 T. HFOs were detected algorithmically from cleaned EEG and visually confirmed by an experienced electroencephalographer.

A prospective study of injuries and illnesses among 910 amateur golfers during one season.

Objectives: Our aims were (a) to describe the prevalence and incidence of self-reported injuries and illnesses of amateur golfers over a 5-month period and (b) to investigate potential risk factors for injury.

Methods: We recruited 910 amateur golfers (733 males [81%] and 177 females [19%]) from golf clubs in the USA and Switzerland. The median age was 60 (IQR: 47-67) and the median golfing handicap was 12 (IQR: 6-18).

Ice in the intertidal: patterns and processes of freeze tolerance in intertidal invertebrates.

Many intertidal invertebrates are freeze tolerant, meaning that they can survive ice formation within their body cavity. Freeze tolerance is a fascinating trait, and understanding its mechanisms is important for predicting the survival of intertidal animals during extreme cold weather events. In this Review, we bring together current research on the ecology, biochemistry and physiology of this group of freeze-tolerant organisms.

Objective: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) has a high probability of becoming drug resistant and is frequently considered for surgical intervention. However, 30% of TLE cases have nonlesional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, which is associated with worse surgical outcomes. Characterizing interactions between temporal and extratemporal structures in these patients may help understand these poor outcomes.

Pepper mild mottle virus as an effective tool in microbial source tracking for deficient domestic on-site water treatment systems.

Pollution from domestic on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) is a significant contaminant pressure in many rural catchments. However, due to their design, and dispersed proliferation, it is difficult to assess their impact. Water testing methodologies employ bacterial culturing methods and chemical analysis which may lose resolution and/or specificity being confounded by diffuse agricultural sources within a rural environment.

Mapping interictal discharges using intracranial EEG-fMRI to predict postsurgical outcomes.

Various subjective and objective methods have been proposed to identify which interictal epileptiform discharge (IED)-related EEG-functional MRI (fMRI) results are more likely to delineate seizure-generating tissue in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy for the purposes of surgical planning. In this intracranial EEG-fMRI study, we evaluated the utility of these methods to localize clinically relevant regions preoperatively and compared the extent of resection of these areas to postoperative outcome. Seventy patients admitted for intracranial video-EEG monitoring were recruited for a simultaneous intracranial EEG-fMRI study.

Back to the future: Comparing yeast as an outmoded artificial tracer for simulating microbial transport in karst aquifer systems to more modern approaches.

Bacterial contamination of karst groundwater is a major concern for public health. Artificial tracing studies are crucial for establishing links between locations where pollutants can rapidly reach the aquifer systems and subsequent receptors, as well as for enhanced understanding of pollutant transport. However, widely used solute artificial tracers do not always move through the subsurface in the same manner as particles and microorganisms, hence may not be ideal proxies for predicting movement of bacterial contaminants.

Not so Simple: Examining the Gendered Nature of Intimate Partner Assault Victimizations.

Although prior research has established a relationship between neighborhood structure and intimate partner violence (IPV), much of this literature focuses on serious IPV, despite the fact that less serious forms of IPV comprise the majority of IPV instances. Further, women are far more likely to experience all types of IPV victimization relative to men, especially simple assault, yet the relative importance of neighborhood structure across gradations of IPV and victim sex is relatively unexplored. We use data from Los Angeles, CA, and disaggregate IPV assaults across victim sex to examine whether neighborhood factors have differential effects on simple and aggravated IPV.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Ilioinguinal and Iliohypogastric Nerve Blocks: A Case Report.

We present a case report of a consult for a gynecologic patient who presented with unrelenting postsurgical pain and previously underwent laparoscopic surgery. Given the pain distribution, we hypothesized the patient had an ilioinguinal or iliohypogastric nerve entrapment injury. We performed a diagnostic and therapeutic ilioinguinal and iliohypogastric nerve block, alleviating the patient's pain.

The embryonic thermal environment has positive but weak effects on thermal tolerance later in life in the aquatic invertebrate Gammarus chevreuxi.

Recent evidence suggests that the adult phenotype is influenced by temperatures experienced in early life. However, our understanding of the extent to which the embryonic environment can modulate thermal tolerance later in life is limited, owing to the paucity of studies with appropriate experimental designs to test for this form of developmental plasticity. We investigated whether the thermal environment experienced during embryonic development affects thermal limits in later life.

Safety Assessment of Trialkyl Trimellitates as Used in Cosmetics.

The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (Panel) assessed the safety of 5 trialkyl trimellitates. These ingredients, which are all structurally related as alkyl esters of trimellitic acid, are reported to function in cosmetics as skin conditioning agents; 2 of the ingredients are also reported to function in cosmetics as plasticizers. The Panel reviewed the available data to determine the safety of these ingredients, and concluded that the trialkyl trimellitates are safe in the current practices of use and concentration when formulated to be non-irritating.

The use of sterol profiles, supported with other faecal source tracking methods, to apportion septic tanks contamination in rural catchments.

Identifying the origin of faecal pollution in water is needed for effective water management decisions to protect both human health and aquatic ecosystems. Traditionally used indicators of faecal contamination, such as E. coli, only indicate pollution from warm-blooded animals and not the specific source of contamination; hence, more source specific tracers are required.

The impact of housing on birth outcomes in breeding macaque groups across multiple research centers.

Demand for nonhuman primates in research has increased over the past several years, while nonhuman primate supply remains a challenge in the United States. Global nonhuman primate supply issues make it increasingly important to maximize domestic colony production. To explore how housing conditions across primate breeding colonies impact infant survival and animal production more broadly, we collected medical records from 7959 rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and 492 pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina) across seven breeding facilities and used generalized mixed-effect modeling to determine prenatal and infant survival odds by housing type and group size.

Microbiological Profile of Fracture Related Infection at a UK Major Trauma Centre.

Fracture Related Infection (FRI) represents one of the biggest challenges for Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery. A better understanding of the microbiological profile should assist with decision-making and optimising outcomes. Our primary aim was to report on the microbiological profile of FRI cases treated over a six-year period at one of Europe's busiest trauma centres.

[Psychotherapy prognostic factors for personality disorders (PD) treatment: The role of self-reported questionnaires].

Objectives Dropout rates in psychotherapy are known to be high in patients with personality disorders (PD; ranging from 25% and 64% for Borderline PD). Faced with this observation, the Treatment Attrition-Retention Scale for Personality Disorders (TARS-PD; Gamache et coll., 2017) was developed to precisely identify patients with PD at high risk of abandoning therapy based on 15 criteria, regrouped in 5 factors: Pathological Narcissism, Antisocial/Psychopathy, Secondary Gain, Low Motivation, and Cluster A Features.

Safety Assessment of Polyglyceryl Fatty Acid Esters as Used in Cosmetics.

The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (Panel) assessed the safety of 274 polyglyceryl fatty acid esters. Each of the esters in this group is a polyether comprising 2 to 20 glyceryl residues, end-capped by esterification with simple carboxylic acids, such as fatty acids. Most of these ingredients are reported to function in cosmetics as skin-conditioning agents and/or surfactants.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Obesity: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Patients and Obstetricians/Gynecologists.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder commonly affecting women of reproductive age. Compared with women without PCOS, women with PCOS are more likely to have overweight or obesity. To better understand the role of obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/GYNs) in diagnosis and treatment of patients with PCOS and obesity, we conducted an anonymous, United States population-based, cross-sectional online survey with 251 patients with PCOS and obesity and 305 health care professionals (HCPs), of which 125 were OB/GYNs.
