Article Synopsis
  • Notalgia paresthetica (NP) is a chronic skin condition characterized by itching and other uncomfortable sensations like pain and tingling, primarily caused by nerve issues from spinal problems or muscle compression.
  • Current treatments for NP vary in effectiveness, with no clear best option; however, topical capsaicin has shown the most promise.
  • The absence of solid treatment guidelines complicates management of NP, impacting patients' quality of life, highlighting the need for more comprehensive research in this area.

Advances in technologies that can record and stimulate deep brain activity in humans have led to impactful discoveries within the field of neuroscience and contributed to the development of novel therapies for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Further progress, however, has been hindered by device limitations in that recording of single-neuron activity during freely moving behaviors in humans has not been possible. Additionally, implantable neurostimulation devices, currently approved for human use, have limited stimulation programmability and restricted full-duplex bidirectional capability.

The inclusion of blood group- and human leukocyte antigen-compatible donor and recipient pairs (CPs) in kidney paired donation (KPD) programs is a novel strategy to increase living donor (LD) transplantation. Transplantation from a donor with a better Living Donor Kidney Profile Index (LKDPI) may encourage CP participation in KPD programs. We undertook parallel analyses using data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients and the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry to determine whether the LKDPI discriminates death-censored graft survival (DCGS) between LDs.

Background: We aimed to assess whether a structured weight management programme incorporating a total diet replacement (TDR) (3-5 months ∼850 kcal/day formula diet) weight loss phase is acceptable to people of South Asian ethnicity and can achieve type 2 diabetes (T2D) remissions similarly to other populations.

Methods: Adults of South Asian ethnicity, aged 18-65 years, with T2D for ≤4 years, and BMI 25-45 kg/m were recruited from primary care and social media, and randomised to commence TDR either immediately (iTDR), or delayed (dTDR) for 3-5 months as a usual care control arm during this period. Intervention effects were tested in randomised comparisons powered to detect significant weight loss, and in an expanded observational analysis to determine remission effect size, including both iTDR and dTDR groups.

Plasmodium parasites responsible for malaria follow a complex life cycle of which half takes place inside the human host. Parasites present diverse antigens at different stages of their life cycle and interact with many surface molecules to attach to and enter host cells. The CIDRα1 domain of Plasmodium falciparum Erythrocyte Membrane Protein 1 (PfEMP1) in infected erythrocytes adheres to one such vascular receptor endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR).

The importance of the immune microenvironment in triple negative and HER2-amplified breast cancer (BC) is well-established; less is known about the immune environment in luminal breast cancers. We aimed to assess for the impact of immune biomarkers on BC outcome in a group of luminal B patients with archived tissue and annotated clinical information. Patients with early breast cancer (EBC) treated in a single institution over a 14-year period, with prospectively collected data were included.

Malaria remains an important public health problem despite efforts to control it. Besides active transmission, relapsing malaria caused by dormant liver stages of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale hypnozoites is a major hurdle in malaria control and elimination programs. Primaquine (PQ) is the most widely used drug for radical cure of malaria.

Hearing impairment is one of the most prevalent disorder in children and adults worldwide, which not only interferes with the acquisition, development and maintenance of speech and language skills but also adversely deprive the auditory nervous system for future learning. It can have long term harmful effect on educational, social, emotional and cognitive skills in young children; restrict the vocational options and employment opportunities in adults; and can cause isolation, loneliness and depression in older adults, if remain undetected and intervened at the earliest. However, early identification and intervention is known to greatly reverse the ill effects and improve the quality of life of children and adults with hearing impairment.

Moderate/severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes injury patterns with heterogeneous pathology producing varying outcomes for recovery. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are particles containing a myriad of molecules involved in cell signaling. EVs may hold promise as biomarkers in TBI because of their encapsulation, including improved stability/decreased degradation.

New tools for monitoring and manipulating neural activity have been developed with steadily improving functionality, specificity, and reliability, which are critical both for mapping neural circuits and treating neurological diseases. This review focuses on the use of an invertebrate animal, the marine mollusk , in the development of novel neurotechniques. We review the basic physiological properties of neurons and discuss the specific aspects that make it advantageous for developing novel neural interfaces: First, nerves consist only of unmyelinated axons with various diameters, providing a particularly useful model of the unmyelinated C fibers in vertebrates that are known to carry important sensory information, including those that signal pain.

Background And Objectives: Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is highly heterogeneous, and tools to better delineate pathophysiology and recovery are needed. Our objective was to profile the response of 2 biomarkers, neurofilament light (NF-L) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), in the serum and CSF of patients with acute SCI to evaluate their ability to objectively characterize injury severity and predict neurologic recovery.

Methods: Blood and CSF samples were obtained from prospectively enrolled patients with acute SCI through days 1-4 postinjury, and the concentration of NF-L and GFAP was quantified using Simoa technology.
