Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disorder and has considerable impact on quality of life. Treatment of DM2 is complex and adherence to treatment requires sophisticated cognition which includes literacy skills.

Methods: Health literacy skills of a cross-sectional nonrandom sample of 164 DM2 outpatients at the Diabetes Unit of the Hospital Universitário Pedro Ernesto at the State University of Rio de Janeiro were evaluated by the short version of the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (s-TOFHLA).

Aim: To assess the effect of child growth status on academic achievement and the association between child growth and academic standing.

Method: The heights of 722 middle-school children were measured using standard procedures and height-for-age z (HAZ) scores were calculated based on an international reference. We report a case of a 49-year-old woman diagnosed with primary Sjögrens Syndrome (pSS) who was submitted to extensive neuropsychobiological assessment. Examination revealed a Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) Full Scale IQ of 97 with no Verbal/Performance IQ discrepancy and performance below estimated premorbid levels on arithmetic skills, visual tracking, naming and delayed paired associate learning/memory. CT scans of the brain were normal.
