We present a case of localised AA-type amyloidosis of the ureter with spheroids of amyloid. Localised AA-type amyloidosis of the urogenital tract is uncommon and extremely rare as a cause of ureteric obstruction, with only two such cases described in the literature to date. Most previously described cases at this site are related to primary AL-type amyloidosis.

Method: 2,586 renal biopsies in Singapore over the past 3 decades were reviewed and compared with data from 28 other countries.
Results: In the 1st decade most Asian countries have mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis as the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis, and in the 3rd decade there has been a dramatic increase in focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis reflecting aging and obesity in keeping with more developed countries.
Aims: We aimed to develop an image analysis software that enabled measurement of glomerular basement membrane (GBM) thickness.
Methods: With this software, we evaluated the range of GBM widths found in a cohort of Asian patients diagnosed with a spectrum of renal diseases including minimal change/IgM nephropathy, focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis, IgA nephropathy, systemic lupus erythematosus nephritis, diabetic nephropathy, pauci-immune crescentic glomerulonephritis, thin basement membrane disease, and tubulointerstitial nephritis. Measurements were taken from a minimum of five glomerular capillary loops of each glomerulus.
Background/aims Several studies have reported varying results of the influence of ACE gene on ACEI/ARB therapy. The efficacy of high dose ARB and its influence on ACE gene have not been explored. This is a 6 year randomised trial in IgA nephritis comparing high dose ARB (Losartan 200 mg/day) with normal dose ARB (Losartan 100 mg/day), normal dose ACEI (20 mg/day) and low dose ACEI (10 mg/day).

The Proteinuria Group (n = 25, 52.

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is a leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) worldwide and its recurrence has been reported in allografts. The present study examined outcomes following renal transplantation (RTX) in 101 patients with ESRD due to biopsy-proven IgAN, in comparison to non-IgA patients, and evaluated the incidence of recurrence.

This study aimed to investigate the role of IL-13 on the development of proteinuria and expression of podocyte-related genes that are associated with nephrotic syndrome. IL-13 was overexpressed in Wistar rats through transfection of a mammalian expression vector cloned with the rat IL-13 gene, into the quadriceps by in vivo electroporation.

Examples of medical discoveries contributing to translational medicine (TM) include the isolation of insulin by Banting (Nobel Laureate, 1923), the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming (Nobel Laureate, 1945) and recently the discovery of the role of bacterium Helicobacter pylori in the causation of gastritis and peptic ulcer by Marshall and Warren (Nobel Laureates, 2005). Clinical research (CR) would be a more appropriate term for the bulk of research work undertaken by doctors.

Methods: Thirty patients were randomized to receive Alemtuzumab together with low-dose cyclosporine (CsA) monotherapy (CAMPATH, n = 20) or to full doses of CsA with azathioprine and corticosteroids (Standard, n = 10). CsA was administered at doses to achieve whole-blood trough CsA levels of 90 to 110 ng/mL and 180 to 225 ng/mL in CAMPATH and Standard groups, respectively.
Background And Aims: Mutations on the a-determinant of hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg), capable of escaping detection and vaccination, are identified in HBsAg-positive/anti-HBs-positive vaccinated infants. We studied the prevalence of these mutants in HBsAg-negative/anti-HBc-positive chronic HBV carriers and patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Methods: DNA sequence coding for the antigenic a-determinant of HBsAg was amplified from either HCC genomic DNA or serum samples of the selected patients and sequenced.
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast is a putative precursor of the majority of invasive breast cancers. The aim of this study was to determine the association of p53 and cerbB2 expression as well as hormonal receptor status with conventional pathologic parameters in a series of Chinese women with DCIS in Singapore. A cohort of 102 breast DCIS cases diagnosed at the Department of Pathology, Singapore General Hospital, were histologically reviewed and classified pathologically.
