The authors examined the nature of the working memory deficit in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD). Three hypotheses were tested: a limited storage capacity, an impaired executive component, and a reduction of psychomotor speed. The ability of trees dependent on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi to establish in ectomycorrhizal forests is unknown. On northern Vancouver Island, Canada, there are sharp boundaries between mixed red cedar (Thuja plicata)-hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) (CH) stands, and stands of hemlock and amabilis fir (Abies amabilis) (HA). Although screening for large deletions or duplications of the BRCA1 gene is becoming a routine component of the molecular diagnosis of familial breast cancer, little is known about the occurrence of such rearrangements in the BRCA2 gene. Because of the high frequency of BRCA2 mutations in breast cancer families with at least one case of male breast cancer, we selected a cohort of 39 such families, tested negative for mutations in the coding regions of BRCA1 and BRCA2, and developed an assay for BRCA2 rearrangements, based on quantitative multiplex PCR of short fluorescent fragments (QMPSF). We found three rearrangements: (1) a deletion of exons 12 and 13; (2) a duplication of exons 1 and 2; and (3) a complete deletion of BRCA2.

Novel copolymer brushes have been synthesized by a two-step "grafting from" method that consists of the electrografting of poly(2-phenyl-2-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidin-1-yloxy)-ethylacrylate) onto stainless steel, followed by the nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization of 2-(dimethylamino ethyl)acrylate and styrene or n-butyl acrylate, initiated from the electrografted polyacrylate chains. The grafted copolymers were quaternized in order to endow them with antibacterial properties. Peeling tests have confirmed the strong adhesion of the grafted copolymer onto the stainless steel substrate.

This paper reports on the preparation of polyester brushes at the surface of electrically conducting materials. A two-step strategy has been worked out that consists of the electropolymerization of an acrylate under a cathodic potential, such that the polyacrylate layer is chemisorbed at the surface. In a second step, either preformed poly(epsilon-caprolactone) chains are grafted onto the polyacrylate sublayer or the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone is initiated from it.

Context: Mistimed and unwanted pregnancies that result in live births are commonly considered together as unintended pregnancies, but they may have different precursors and outcomes.

Methods: Data from 15 states participating in the 1998 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System were used to calculate the prevalence of intended, mistimed and unwanted conceptions, by selected variables. Associations between unintendedness and women's behaviors and experiences before, during and after the pregnancy were assessed through unadjusted relative risks.

Thyroid dysgenesis is the most common cause of congenital hypothyroidism, a relatively frequent disease affecting 1 in 3000-4000 newborns. Whereas most cases are sporadic, mutations in transcription factors implicated in thyroid development have been shown to cause a minority of cases transmitted as monogenic Mendelian diseases. PAX8 is one of these transcription factors, and so far, five mutations have been identified in its paired domain in patients with thyroid dysgenesis.

Background: An improved understanding of the extraosseous and intraosseous blood supply of the distal aspect of the tibia, distal aspect of the fibula, cuboid, and cuneiforms should identify vascular territories that would enable surgeons to perform rotational vascularized pedicle bone-grafting procedures in the foot and ankle.

Methods: We investigated the blood supply of twenty cadaveric lower extremities using two vascular injection techniques. In order to define the extraosseous and intraosseous arterial anatomy in this region, ten specimens were sequentially subjected to injection with Batson's compound, soft-tissue digestion, and bone-clearing according to a modified Spalteholz technique.

AlphaT-catenin is a recently identified member of the alpha-catenin family of cell-cell adhesion molecules. Its expression is restricted mainly to cardiomyocytes, although it is also expressed in skeletal muscle, testis and brain. Like other alpha-catenins, alphaT-catenin provides an indispensable link between a cadherin-based adhesion complex and the actin cytoskeleton, resulting in strong cell-cell adhesion.

A room temperature solid-state structural transformation was observed in 3 nm ZnS nanoparticles in methanol following the addition of water (Zhang et al., Nature 424, 1025, 2003). Experimental wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS), x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy measurements show a large increase in crystallinity associated with water addition, in agreement with molecular dynamics (MD) predictions.

Nanoparticles may contain unusual forms of structural disorder that can substantially modify materials properties and thus cannot solely be considered as small pieces of bulk material. We have developed a method to quantify intermediate-range order in 3.4-nanometer-diameter zinc sulfide nanoparticles and show that structural coherence is lost over distances beyond 2 nanometers.

Purpose: To test the anticancer properties of a nonhydrolyzable ether-linked acetic acid analogue of vitamin E, 2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-2R-(4R,8R, 12-trimethyltridecyl)chroman-6-yloxyacetic acid (alpha-TEA), and a derivative of camptothecin, 9-nitrocamptothecin (9-NC)singly and in combination against mouse mammary tumor cells (line 66 clone 4 stably transfected with green fluorescent protein; 66cl-4-GFP) cultured in vitro or transplanted subcutaneously into the inguinal region of female BALB/c mice to form established tumors.

Methods: Following in vitro treatment of 66cl-4-GFP cells with alpha-TEA and suboptimal concentrations of 9-NC, singly or in combination, apoptosis was measured by morphological evaluation of nuclei stained with 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), and DNA synthesis arrest was measured by tritiated thymidine uptake. For in vivo analyses alpha-TEA and 9-NC, both water-insoluble compounds, were formulated into liposomes using dil-auroylphosphatidylcholine and administered by aerosol to deliver doses calculated to be 36 and 0.

The structure of 3 nm ZnS nanoparticles differs from that of bulk ZnS and is shown to vary with the particle aggregation state. Dispersed or weakly aggregated nanoparticles in suspension have a more distorted internal structure than strongly aggregated nanoparticles. Reversible switching between distorted and crystalline structures can be induced by changing the aggregation state via slow drying and ultrasonic agitation.

A fundamental goal of ecology is to understand what controls the distribution and abundance of species. Both environmental niches and trade-offs among species in dispersal and competitive ability have traditionally been cited as determinants of plant community composition. More recently, neutral models have shown that communities of species with identical life-history characteristics and no adaptation to environmental niches can form spatial distribution patterns similar to those found in nature, so long as the species have a limited dispersal distance.

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of cyclosporin A liposome aerosol on the anticancer activity of paclitaxel (PTX) liposome aerosol against renal cell carcinoma (Renca) pulmonary metastases in mice. Cyclosporin A (CsA) was administered as a liposome aerosol for one-half hour before starting one-half hour treatment with PTX liposome aerosol (CsA/PTX), and in a second groups of animals cyclosporin A liposome aerosol was given before PTX for one-half hour and also later by mixing a second dose of cyclosporin A aerosol with PTX aerosol and extending the treatment period to one hour (CsA/PTX + CsA). In one experiment, PTX and CsA/PTX aerosols were significantly more effective compared to untreated controls against renal cell cancer as measured by lung weights and tumor surface areas.

The oxidation of phenolic substrates with H2O2 catalysed by [MnIV2(mu-O)3(TMTACN)2](PF6)2 1, (TMTACN, 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) has been investigated by use of ESI mass spectrometry. The role of the phenols as one-electron reductants and as co-ligands in the stabilisation and reaction of an intermediate O=MnV species has been analysed and the presence of a variety of manganese species in solution has been explained. Our results lead to a proposed mechanism for the catalytic oxidation of phenols in this system.

A series of Au nanoparticles functionalised with nitroxide spin labels has been prepared and studied by EPR spectroscopy. Samples with low coverage of the spin label were used to investigate the dynamics of the surface-attached labels at different distances from the Au surface. The rotational correlation times of spin labels vary from 10(-10) s to more than 3 x 10(-9) s, depending on the chain length of the label and the surrounding ligand.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) are hamartomatous vascular malformations characterized by abnormally enlarged capillary cavities without intervening brain parenchyma. They cause seizures and focal neurological deficits due to cerebral hemorrhages. CCM loci have already been assigned to chromosomes 7q (CCM1), 7p (CCM2), and 3q (CCM3) and have been identified in 40%, 20%, and 40%, respectively, of families with CCM.
