End-stage liver disease is marked by portal hypertension, systemic elevations in ammonia, and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While these clinical consequences of cirrhosis are well described, it remains poorly understood whether hepatic insufficiency and the accompanying elevations in ammonia contribute to HCC carcinogenesis. Using preclinical models, we discovered that ammonia entered the cell through the transporter SLC4A11 and served as a nitrogen source for amino acid and nucleotide biosynthesis.

Despite this, RSV-specific therapeutic options are limited. Rilematovir is an investigational, orally administered inhibitor of RSV fusion protein-mediated viral entry.

The use of cochlear implants (CI) may be associated with different complications, being extrusion of the device one of the most common. Reconstruction of the defect with a healthy and vascularized tissue is often required. We present two patients with a CI extrusion treated with a temporoparietal fascia flap.

Conventional cultures are able to detect only up to 25% of bacteremia. Several studies have suggested that molecular tests could be a faster and effective tool for detection of bacterial infections.

Here, we discover that T cell-derived interferon (IFN)γ in combination with arachidonic acid (AA) induces immunogenic tumor ferroptosis, serving as a mode of action for CD8 T cell (CTL)-mediated tumor killing. Mechanistically, IFNγ stimulates ACSL4 and alters tumor cell lipid pattern, thereby increasing incorporations of AA into C16 and C18 acyl chain-containing phospholipids.

Nucleophosmin (NPM) is a nuclear protein that plays key roles in cellular metabolism including ribosome biogenesis, mRNA processing and chromatin remodeling and is regulated by citrullination. In this study, we explored if the same citrullinated arginines within NPM are involved in gene regulation and immune activation.

Methods: PADI2 and PADI4 expression was assessed immunohistochemically in a cohort of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients.
Background: Both pathogenic bacteria and viruses are frequently detected in the nasopharynx (NP) of children in the absence of acute respiratory infection (ARI) symptoms. The aim of this study was to estimate the aetiological fractions for ARI hospitalisation in children for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza virus and to determine whether detection of specific respiratory pathogens on NP samples was associated with ARI hospitalisation.
Methods: 349 children up to 5 years of age hospitalised for ARI (following a symptom-based case definition) and 306 hospital controls were prospectively enrolled in 16 centres across seven European Union countries between 2016 and 2019.
Background: Homocitrullination is the post-translational modification of lysine that is recognized by T cells.
Methods: This study identified homocitrullinated peptides from aldolase, enolase, cytokeratin and binding immunoglobulin protein and used human leukocyte antigen (HLA) transgenic mice to assess immunogenicity by enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot assay. Vaccine efficacy was assessed in tumor therapy studies using HLA-matched B16 melanoma expressing constitutive or interferon γ (IFNγ)-inducible major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) as represented by most human tumors.
We conducted a multicenter clinical validity study of the Panbio coronavirus disease 2019 Antigen Rapid Test of nasopharyngeal samples in pediatric patients with coronavirus disease 2019-compatible symptoms of ≤5 days of evolution. Our study showed limited accuracy in nasopharyngeal antigen testing: overall sensitivity was 45.4%, and 99.

Methods: We used Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) transgenic mouse models to assess the immunogenicity of citrullinated peptide vaccine by cytokine Enzyme linked immunosorbant spot (ELISpot) assay.

Background: Different procedures are available to help clinicians evaluate symmetry and cosmetic results in an objective manner after conservative breast cancer surgery. However, there are no similar methods in esthetic breast surgery, where the subjective assessment of the surgeon or the patient is usually considered the gold standard. The aim of this study is to evaluate the application of four software programs in the context of esthetic breast surgery and contrast their results with those of the subjective evaluation by a series of healthcare professionals.

A total of 85 children were included, 11 (13%) had a severe infection. Panton-Valentine leukocidin-positive isolates were 17%, and 6% of the isolates were methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Various strategies have emerged in order to carry out lipidomic studies. These include both shotgun approaches as well as those engaging liquid chromatographic separation of lipid species prior to mass spectrometric analysis.

CD8 T cells activated by cancer immunotherapy clear tumours mainly by inducing cell death through perforin-granzyme and Fas-Fas ligand pathways. Ferroptosis is a form of cell death that differs from apoptosis and results from iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxide.

For men who develop metastatic castration resistant PCa (mCRPC), survival is limited, making the identification of novel therapies for mCRPC critical. We have found that deficient lipid oxidation via carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT1) results in decreased growth and invasion, underscoring the role of lipid oxidation to fuel PCa growth.

Further plasticity is displayed through their ability to be polarized as subtypes M1 and M2 in a cell culture microenvironment.
