Introduction: Increased serum uric acid (SUA) levels are found in cardiovascular and kidney diseases, associated with the development of vascular injury. Uric acid stimulates the inflammatory pathways, promotes vascular smooth muscle cells proliferation, activates renin-angiotensin system leading to the development and progression of vascular damage. Renal function-normalized uric acid [SUA to serum creatinine ratio (SUA/SCr)] has been suggested to be a better indicator of uric acid.

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for patients with a large preoperative deformity (more than 10° varus or valgus) remains a challenge leading to a high rate of outliers, unsatisfactory functional results, or early prosthetic loosening. Robotic arm-assisted TKA (RATKA) has shown improvements in implant positioning accuracy. This study aimed to assess RATKA implant positioning accuracy and functional results at one year postoperative for patients with a large preoperative deformity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the impact of different uncemented femoral stem designs (straight vs. anatomical) on clinical outcomes in total hip arthroplasty (THA) for osteoarthritis patients.
  • A total of 84 patients were divided into two groups based on stem design, with clinical assessments taken at multiple follow-up points using various standardized scoring tools.
  • Results indicated no significant differences in overall clinical outcomes between the two designs; however, the anatomical stem group had lower complication rates and is suggested as a preferable option in THA.

Background: This retrospective study compares the outcomes of unicompartmental medial fixed-bearing knee arthroplasty (mUKA), involving a cemented metal-backed (MB) or an all-polyethylene (AP) tibial component, performed in obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) > 30 with a follow-up of at least 5 years.

Methods: The institutional database was mined for primary mUKAs involving an MB or an AP tibial component (MB-UKA and AP-UKA groups, respectively) performed from January 2015 to August 2019. Patient demographics and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were compared and a propensity score matching (PSM) analysis (1:1) using multiple variables was conducted.

Background: Hip osteoarthritis (HOA) is a disease with globally rising incidence that leads to disability and morbidity, overall, in older populations, and might be primary or secondary to numerous risk factors. The most common idiopathic HOA is generally a diagnosis of exclusion, with pathogenetic mechanisms largely still misunderstood. We aimed to investigate the correlation between femoral-acetabular and spinopelvic anatomical and computed tomography (CT) characteristics, and the presence of primary OA.

The evaluation of estimated GFR (eGFR) is a pivotal staging step in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and renal ultrasound plays an important role in diagnosis, prognosis and progression of CKD. The interaction between histopathological diagnosis and ultrasound parameters in eGFR determination has not been fully investigated yet. The study examined the results of native kidney biopsies performed in 48 Italian centers between 2012 and 2020.

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to rise globally, paralleled by an increase in associated morbidity and mortality, as well as significant implications for patient quality of life and national economies. Chronic kidney disease often progresses unrecognized by patients and physicians, despite diagnosis relying on two simple laboratory measures: estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine analysis. GFR measurement has been grounded in renal physiology, specifically the concept of clearance, with creatinine identified as a suitable endogenous marker for estimating creatinine clearance (CrCl).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the presence of mast cells in the synovial tissue of patients with gleno-humeral osteoarthritis (OA) and a control group without OA.
  • Synovial samples were analyzed from 23 OA patients and 20 controls, assessing pain, functional ability, and conducting immunohistochemical analysis to identify mast cells and blood vessels.
  • Results showed significantly higher mast cell counts and a greater area occupied by these cells in OA samples, suggesting a potential role of mast cells in the development of osteoarthritis, though a direct cause-effect relationship could not be established.
