Rubisco activase (Rca) is phosphorylated at threonine-78 (Thr78) in low light and in the dark, suggesting a potential regulatory role in photosynthesis, but this has not been directly tested. To do so, we transformed an -knockdown mutant largely lacking redox regulation with wild-type Rca-β or Rca-β with Thr78-to-Ala (T78A) or Thr78-to-Ser (T78S) site-directed mutations. Interestingly, the T78S mutant was hyperphosphorylated at the Ser78 site relative to Thr78 of the Rca-β wild-type control, as evidenced by immunoblotting with custom antibodies and quantitative mass spectrometry.

We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of guided-mode resonance (GMR) linear polarizers that operate in the optical communications C-band near a wavelength of 1550 nm. We provide theoretical and experimental spectra using resonant elements fashioned in three material systems. In particular, we investigate silicon nitride resonant gratings and titanium dioxide gratings on glass substrates as well as silicon-on-quartz gratings.

We present a new class of coherent perfect absorbers based on guided-mode resonance in thin semiconductor films. Using particle-swarm optimization methods, we design a thin-film amorphous silicon grating that maximizes coherent modulation of the absorbance. The optimized device exhibits a maximum scattering power of ∼94% and a power absorption limit approaching 100% at the 1550-nm wavelength.

Hexokinase (HXK) is present in all virtually living organisms and is central to carbohydrate metabolism catalysing the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of hexoses. In plants, HXKs are supposed to act as sugar sensors and/or to interact with other enzymes directly supplying metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, the nucleotide phosphate monosaccharide (NDP-glucose) pathway and the pentose phosphate pathway. We identified nine members of the tobacco HXK gene family and observed that among RNAi lines of these nine NtHXKs, only RNAi lines of NtHXK1 showed an altered phenotype, namely stunted growth and leaf chlorosis.

We have developed a novel, model-based active contour algorithm, termed "snakules", for the annotation of spicules on mammography. At each suspect spiculated mass location that has been identified by either a radiologist or a computer-aided detection (CADe) algorithm, we deploy snakules that are converging open-ended active contours also known as snakes. The set of convergent snakules have the ability to deform, grow and adapt to the true spicules in the image, by an attractive process of curve evolution and motion that optimizes the local matching energy.
