Introduction: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic presented unique challenges for surveillance of the military population, which include active component service members and their family members. Through integrating multiple Department of Defense surveillance systems, the Army Public Health Center can provide near real-time case counts to Army leadership on a daily basis.

Materials And Methods: The incidence of COVID-19 was tracked by incorporating data from the Disease Reporting System Internet, laboratory test results, Commanders' Critical Incidence Reports, reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention military liaison, and media reports.

Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the most common indication for lung transplantation in North America and variants in telomere-maintenance genes are the most common identifiable cause of IPF. We reasoned that younger IPF patients are more likely to undergo lung transplantation and we hypothesized that lung transplant recipients would be enriched for individuals with telomere-mediated disease due to the earlier onset and more severe disease in these patients.

Methods: Individuals with IPF who underwent lung transplantation or were evaluated in an interstitial lung disease specialty clinic who did not undergo lung transplantation were examined.

The co-occurrence of COVID-19, non-communicable diseases and socioeconomic disadvantage has been identified as creating a syndemic: a state of synergistic epidemics, occurring when co-occurring health conditions interact with social conditions to amplify the burden of disease. In this study, we use the concept of illness management work to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the lives of people living with, often multiple, chronic health conditions in a range of social circumstances. In-depth interviews were conducted between May and July 2020 with 29 participants living in a city in North East England.

Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD) is an inherited inborn error of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism pathway. It results from mutations in the ALDH5A1 gene leading to elevated GABA, γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), succinic semialdehyde (SSA), decreased glutamine and alterations in several other metabolites. The phenotype includes developmental and cognitive delays, hypotonia, seizures, neuropsychiatric morbidity and other nervous system pathologies.

Many organelles, such as lysosomes and mitochondria, maintain a pH that is different from the cytoplasmic pH. These pH differences have important functional ramifications for those organelles. Many cellular events depend upon a well-compartmentalized distribution of H ions spanning the membrane for the optimal function.

Background: Program directors for Family Medicine residencies must navigate an increasingly complex recruitment landscape. With increasing United States allopathic and osteopathic graduates and continued high volumes of international graduates, the ability to identify application characteristics that predict quality residents both for filtering applications for interview offers and ranking is vital. Our study concentrates on the predictive value of reported life experiences including volunteerism, work experiences, prior career, research experience, and participation in medical student organizations including student leadership.

Fibrotic interstitial lung disease (fILD) is a group of pathologic entities characterized by scarring of the lungs and high morbidity and mortality. Research investigating how socioeconomic and residential factors impact outcomes in patients with fILD is lacking. To determine the association between neighborhood-level disadvantage and presentation severity, disease progression, lung transplantation, and mortality in patients with fILD from the United States and Canada.

Background: Pediatric patients with nephrotic syndrome take medications long-term with significant toxicity and complex regimens, yet data on medication adherence are limited.

Methods: In a multicenter observational study of patients with nephrotic syndrome, NEPTUNE (NCT01209000), we surveyed caregivers of patients <19 years old and adolescent patients on medication adherence during longitudinal follow-up beginning in June 2015. Data extraction was in October 2020.

Herbivore grazing is an important determinant of plant community assemblages. Thus, it is essential to understand its impact to direct conservation efforts in regions where herbivores are managed. While the impacts of reindeer () grazing on plant biodiversity and community composition in the Fennoscandian tundra are well studied, the impact of reindeer grazing on phylogenetic community structure is not.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the influence of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disease severity on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with glomerular disease, focusing on an ethnically diverse cohort.
  • Results showed that Black and Hispanic participants experienced worse socioeconomic conditions and more severe disease compared to White or Asian participants, impacting their HRQOL.
  • After adjusting for socioeconomic factors and disease severity, the differences in HRQOL among racial groups in adults diminished, while no significant racial/ethnic differences were found in children.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks in nursing homes (NHs) have been devastating and have led to the creation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) units within NHs to care for affected patients. Frequency and persistence of SARS-CoV-2 environmental contamination in these units have not been studied.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted between October 2020 and January 2021 in four Michigan NHs.

Phi 6 (Φ6) bacteriophage is a proposed surrogate to study pathogenic enveloped viruses including SARS-CoV-2-the causative agent of COVID-19-based on structural similarities, BSL-1 status, and ease of use. To determine the role of virus-contaminated hands in disease transmission, an enhanced understanding of buffer and method performance for Φ6 recovery needs to be determined. Four buffer types and three methodologies were investigated for the recovery of Φ6 from human fingerpads over a 30 min duration.
