The authors examined the efficacy of Bacillus anthracis protective antigen (PA) combined with adjuvants as vaccines against an aerosol challenge of virulent anthrax spores in rhesus macaques. Adjuvants tested included i) aluminum hydroxide (Alhydrogel), ii) saponin QS-21 and iii) monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) in squalene/lecithin/Tween 80 emulsion (SLT). Distribution measurements between neutral aqueous solution and cyclohexane, at varying solute concentrations, showed no evidence of self-association of the solute in either solvent, and the possibility of specific entrainment of water by solutes entering cyclohexane was ruled out by the results of experiments with tritiated water. The yeast gene encodes the catalytic subunit of DNA polymerase zeta, a nonessential enzyme that is thought to carry out translesion replication and is responsible for virtually all DNA damage-induced mutagenesis and the majority of spontaneous mutagenesis. In in vitro studies, the rates of mutation of avian isolates of Escherichia coli and Salmonella were determined following nalidixic acid, sarafloxacin, or enrofloxacin pressure. The rates of mutation were similar for nalidixic acid and sarafloxacin, whereas a lower rate of mutation was seen after enrofloxacin pressure.

Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF), caused by the arenavirus Junin, is a major public health problem among agricultural workers in Argentina. A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, efficacy trial of Candid 1, a live attenuated Junin virus vaccine, was conducted over two consecutive epidemic seasons among 6500 male agricultural workers in the AHF-endemic region. Twenty-three men developed laboratory-confirmed AHF during the study; 22 received placebo and 1 received vaccine (vaccine efficacy 95%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 82%-99%).

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to determine if quantitative analysis of peripheral enhancement and spatial contrast uptake heterogeneity is useful in the characterisation of abnormalities seen at breast MRI.
Method: Ninety-one women underwent dynamic gadolinium-enhanced breast MRI. Regions of interest were processed by a parallel thinning algorithm to define central and peripheral subregions of lesions.

To assist in the greatly increasing number of applications of Raman microscopy as a tool for non-intrusive, in situ archaeometric analysis, the Raman spectra of over 60 pigments, both natural and synthetic, known to have been in use before approximately 1850 AD, have been studied by Raman microscopy. The extent of aganglionosis was as follows: short segment restricted to the rectosigmoid or descending colon (n = 44, 75%); long segment (n = 9,15%); ultra-short segment (n = 3, 5%); unknown length because of death without autopsy (n = 3, 5%). Cutaneous pox lesions developed in a higher proportion of scarification vaccinees. Scarification and intradermal vaccine recipients who developed cutaneous pox lesions had more local reactions but also achieved significantly higher cell-mediated and neutralizing antibody responses than those who did not develop pox lesions.
