Background: Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) and anti-tissue transglutaminases (a-tTg) play a pivotal role in coeliac disease (CD) diagnosis. Deamidated anti-gliadin peptides (DGP) were added to the CD diagnostic workup.

Aims: We aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracies of ELISA-based (a-tTg/DGP) and immunofluorescence-ELISA-based strategies (EMA/a-tTg) for CD diagnosis.

Grounded in the interdisciplinary crosstalk among physics and biological sciences, precision medicine-based diagnosis and treatment strategies have recently gained great attention for the actual applicability of new engineered approaches in many medical fields, particularly in oncology. Within this framework, the use of ultrasounds employed to attack cancer cells in tumors to induce possible mechanical damage at different scales has received growing attention from scholars and scientists worldwide. With these considerations in mind, on the basis of ad hoc elastodynamic solutions and numerical simulations, we propose a pilot study for in silico modeling of the propagation of ultrasound waves inside tissues, with the aim of selecting proper frequencies and powers to be irradiated locally through a new teragnostic platform based on Lab-on-Fiber technology, baptized as a hospital in the needle and already the object of a patent.

During implant surgery procedures, surgical precision is an essential prerequisite for the functional and aesthetic success of the prosthetic crown to be placed on the dental implant. A modern implant surgical approach should be standardized as much as possible to guarantee extreme precision in the insertion of the implant into the upper and lower bone jaws. Among the most common surgical errors during implant surgery there is the over-preparation of the surgical alveolus with possible damage to the contiguous anatomical structures.

In this work, we report on the first demonstration of Lab on Fiber (LOF) dosimeter for ionizing radiation monitoring at ultra-high doses. The new dosimeter consists in a metallo-dielectric resonator at sub-wavelength scale supporting localized surface plasmon resonances realized on the optical fiber (OF) tip. The resonating structure involves two gold gratings separated by a templated dielectric layer of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

Combination of responsive microgels and photonic resonant nanostructures represents an intriguing technological tool for realizing tunable and reconfigurable platforms, especially useful for biochemical sensing applications. Interaction of light with microgel particles during their swelling/shrinking dynamics is not trivial because of the inverse relationships between their size and refractive index. In this work, we propose a reliable analytical model describing the optical properties of closed-packed assembly of surface-attached microgels, as a function of the external stimulus applied.

Integrating multi-responsive polymers such as microgels onto optical fiber tips, in a controlled fashion, enables unprecedented functionalities to Lab-on-fiber optrodes. The creation of a uniform microgel monolayer with a specific coverage factor is crucial for enhancing the probes responsivity to a pre-defined target parameter. Here we report a reliable fabrication strategy, based on the dip coating technique, for the controlled realization of microgel monolayer onto unconventional substrates, such as the optical fiber tip.

How can we acquire a grasp of cardinal numbers, even the first very small positive cardinal numbers, given that they are abstract mathematical entities? That problem of cognitive access is the main focus of this paper. All the major rival views about the nature and existence of cardinal numbers face difficulties; and the view most consonant with our normal thought and talk about numbers, the view that cardinal numbers are sizes of sets, runs into the cognitive access problem. The source of the problem is the plausible assumption that cognitive access to something requires causal contact with it.

Precision medicine is continuously demanding for novel point of care systems, potentially exploitable also for in-vivo analysis. Biosensing probes based on Lab-On-Fiber Technology have been recently developed to meet these challenges. However, devices exploiting standard label-free approaches (based on ligand/target molecule interaction) suffer from low sensitivity in all cases where the detection of small molecules at low concentrations is needed.

The objective of this study was to determine if pregnancy specific protein-B (PSPB) and estrone sulfate (E(1)SO(4)) could be used to determine pregnancy status in fallow deer (Dama dama ). Forty mature does were synchronized for estrus with an intravaginal progesterone-releasing device (CIDR) and then artificially inseminated via laparoscopy with frozen semen on one day. Ultrasound examination and jugular blood sampling were done 49 days later.

Estrus and ovulation of mature fallow does (n=155) on two North American farms were synchronized by intravaginal silastic devices containing 0.3 g progesterone (CIDR-type G) for 14 d. Each of 151 does received laparoscopic intrauterine inseminations of either 50x10(6) (n=125) or 25x10(6) (n=26) frozen-thawed spermatozoa, 65 to 68 h after CIDR device withdrawal.
