Background: Primary aldosteronism (PA), the most common curable salt-dependent form of arterial hypertension, features renal K loss and enhanced Na reabsorption. We investigated whether the electrolyte, water, and TonEBP (tonicity-responsive enhancer binding protein)/ (nuclear factor of activated T cells 5) content is altered in the skin of patients with PA and corrected by surgical cure.
Methods: We obtained skin biopsies from 80 subjects: 49 consecutive patients with PA, optimally treated with a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist; 6 essential hypertensives; and 25 normotensive controls.
Nanodecoy systems based on analogues of viral cellular receptors assembled onto fluid lipid-based membranes of nano/extravescicles are potential new tools to complement classic therapeutic or preventive antiviral approaches. The need for lipid-based membranes for transmembrane receptor anchorage may pose technical challenges along industrial translation, calling for alternative geometries for receptor multimerization. Here we perform a genome-wide association study in a discovery cohort of 562 cases and 950 controls and identify three main loci on chromosomes 1, 13 and X; associations on chromosome 1 and 13 are replicated in a second cohort and confirmed by a meta-analysis involving 1162 cases and 3296 controls. The association on chromosome 13 is specific to men and stronger in bilateral adrenal hyperplasia than aldosterone producing adenoma.

The dramatic change of the natural history of HIV-infected patients by highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has exposed these patients to cardiovascular risk, including cardiovascular disease and hypertension. This assumption reflects the primacy accorded to elevated levels of angiotensin in terms of deleterious cardiovascular effects, and the fact that in primary aldosteronism renin and angiotensin levels are low.
