Thoracostomies, and subsequent placements of chest tubes (CTs), are a standard procedure in several domains of medicine. In emergency medicine, thoracostomies are indicated to release a relevant hemothorax or pneumothorax, particularly a life-threatening tension pneumothorax. In many cases, an initial finger-assisted thoracostomy is followed by placement of a CT to ensure continuous decompression of blood and air.

: Parental internalizing issues, particularly maternal mental health, can significantly influence adolescents' mental health by altering parenting behaviors and roles. This study explores the role of parental rejection in moderating the relationship between parental depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms and adolescents' mental health and quality of life. : One hundred thirty eight mothers (mean age: 47.

Objectives: Physician staffed Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (P-HEMS) care in the Netherlands has transitioned from predominantly trauma management to handling a variety of medical conditions. Relevant outcome parameters for Dutch P-HEMS research have not been previously defined. National consensus was sought to identify relevant long term patient outcome parameters, process outcome parameters and performance outcome parameters for Dutch P-HEMS care.

We report a tool combining a biologically inspired evolutionary algorithm with machine learning to design fine-tuned zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a sub-family of MOFs, for desired sets of diffusivities of species () and / of any given mixture of species and . We display the efficacy and validitiy of our tool, by designing ZIFs that meet industrial performance criteria of permeability and selectivity, for CO/CH, O/N and CH/CH mixtures.

Objectives: Post-traumatic critical-sized bone defects pose a reconstructive challenge for reconstructive surgeons. The vascularized fibula graft is a well-described treatment for osseous defects of the femur and tibia. This study aimed to assess long-term patient-reported quality of life, the success-, and complication rates in lower extremity reconstruction with vascularized fibula grafts.

Purpose: To estimate the one-year sum of direct costs related to open lower limb fracture treatment in an academic setting in the Netherlands. The secondary objective was to estimate the impact of deep infection and nonunion on one-year total direct costs.

Methods: A multi-center, retrospective cost analysis of open lower limb fractures treated in an academic setting in the Netherlands, between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2018, was conducted.

Purpose: Trauma-related death is used as a parameter to evaluate the quality of trauma care and identify cases in which mortality could have been prevented under optimal trauma care conditions. The aim of this study was to identify trauma-related preventable death (TRPD) within our institute by an external expert panel and to evaluate inter-panel reliability.

Methods: Trauma-related deaths between the 1st of January 2020 and the 1st of February 2022 at the Amsterdam University Medical Centre were identified.

Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the Netherlands, suspected TBI is a criterion for the dispatch of the physician-staffed helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) which are operational 24 h per day. It is unknown if patient outcome is influenced by the time of day during which the incident occurs.

Objectives: Open tibial fractures are relatively common injuries following traffic accidents. The vulnerability of the soft tissues surrounding the tibia increases the susceptibility to complications, including infection and nonunion. To minimize complications, a multidisciplinary, timely approach is crucial.

Unlabelled: The pedicled fibula flap is a reliable technique to treat large defects in the tibia. Despite increasing evidence of its efficacy and good long-term outcomes, a knowledge gap exists in its indications and technique. This instructional article presents a comprehensive overview of the indications, pre-operative planning, step-by-step surgery, and subsequent post-operative management.

Purpose: Traumatic crush injuries of the lower limb often accompany severe complications. The incorporation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to standard trauma care may have the potential to diminish injury-related complications and improve outcome in such cases. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the management of severe lower limb soft tissue injuries.

A paradigm shift in traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA) perception switched the traditional belief of futility of TCA resuscitation to a more optimistic perspective, at least in selected cases. The goal of TCA resuscitation is to rapidly and aggressively treat the common potentially reversible causes of TCA. Advances in diagnostics and therapy in TCA are ongoing; however, they are not always translating into improved outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • TEVAR (thoracic endovascular aortic repair) is being increasingly used to treat blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI), but there is limited research on what happens to patients after they leave the hospital.
  • A study analyzed over 2,000 patients who underwent TEVAR for BTAI, finding that 13% were readmitted within 90 days, mainly due to reasons like sepsis and wound complications.
  • The readmission rate for BTAI patients was significantly lower compared to those treated for acute type B aortic dissections, suggesting different recovery profiles for trauma-related versus non-traumatic vascular conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and types of injuries that were not diagnosed promptly during the initial assessment of trauma patients using total-body computed tomography (TBCT) in a Level 1 Trauma Center in the Netherlands.
  • A retrospective analysis of 697 trauma patients revealed that 13.9% experienced delayed diagnosis of injuries, with nearly 81.4% of those being clinically significant, often detected before or during follow-up surveys.
  • Key factors linked to delayed diagnoses included admission to the ICU, higher injury severity scores, and extended hospitalization durations.

With the expansion of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) to younger and lower-surgical-risk patients, many younger and less comorbid patients will be treated with TAVR and are expected to have a life expectancy that will exceed the durability of their transcatheter heart valve. Consequently, the number of patients requiring reintervention will undoubtedly increase in the near future. Redo-TAVR and TAVR explantation followed by surgical aortic valve replacement are the different therapeutic options in the event of bioprosthetic valve failure and the need for reintervention.

Purpose: Interventions performed within the first hour after trauma increase survival rates. Literature showed that measuring times can optimize the trauma resuscitation process as time awareness potentially reduces acute care time. This study examined the effect of a digital clock placement on trauma resuscitation times in an academic level-1 trauma center.

Introduction: Guidelines on the management of open tibia fractures recommend timely treatment in a limb reconstruction center which offer joint orthopedic-trauma and plastic surgery services. However, patient's transfer between centers remains inevitable. This review aims to evaluate the clinical outcomes and hospital factors for patients directly admitted and transferred patients to a limb-reconstruction center.

Background: The Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) is one of the most popular semi-structured psychiatric interviews for children and adolescents. Its latest DSM-5 version (K-SADS-PL DSM-5) has only recently been adapted and validated in various languages. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the reliability and validity of the Greek version of the K-SADS-PL DSM-5.

Introduction: It is increasingly recognized that health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a relevant outcome to study in populations comprising severely injured patients. Although some studies have readily demonstrated a compromised HRQoL in those patients, evidence regarding factors that predict HRQoL is scarce. This hinders attempts to prepare patient-specific plans that may aid in revalidation and improved life satisfaction.
