Article Synopsis
  • Micturition is the release of urine, which serves important functions for both bodily health and social communication in various species, including mice.
  • In a study, mice displayed different patterns of urine release based on their social isolation and sensory cues, with behaviors classified as high or low territory-covering micturition (TCM).
  • Researchers discovered that the lateral hypothalamic area of the brain plays a crucial role in modulating these micturition patterns, and manipulating this region can alter urine release behaviors regardless of social context.

The lateral habenula (LHb) is an epithalamic brain structure critical for processing and adapting to negative action outcomes. However, despite the importance of LHb to behavior and the clear anatomical and molecular diversity of LHb neurons, the neuron types of the habenula remain unknown. Here, we use high-throughput single-cell transcriptional profiling, monosynaptic retrograde tracing, and multiplexed FISH to characterize the cells of the mouse habenula.
