Unlocking the potential of broadly reactive coronavirus monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and their derivatives offers a transformative therapeutic avenue against severe COVID-19, especially crucial for safeguarding high-risk populations. Novel mAb-based immunotherapies may help address the reduced efficacy of current vaccines and neutralizing mAbs caused by the emergence of variants of concern (VOCs). Using phage display technology, we discovered a pan-SARS-CoV-2 mAb (C10) that targets a conserved region within the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the virus.

Article Synopsis
  • Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has a poor prognosis, and cathepsin D (cath-D) is a key target for antibody therapies to enhance natural killer (NK) cell activity against tumors.
  • This study explored the effectiveness of engineered anti-cath-D antibodies in triggering NK cell-mediated attacks (ADCC) and their potential in combination therapies for TNBC.
  • Results showed that the Fc-engineered antibodies activated NK cells and promoted ADCC against TNBC cells, suggesting their promise as a treatment strategy when used alongside other therapies.

Diabolican is an exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by Vibrio diabolicus HE800, a mesophilic bacterium firstly isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal field. Its glycosaminoglycan (GAG)-like structure, consisting of a tetrasaccharide repeating unit composed of two aminosugars (N-acetyl-glucosamine and N-acetyl-galactosamine) and two glucuronic acid units, suggested to subject it to regioselective sulfation processes, in order to obtain some sulfated derivatives potentially acting as GAG mimics. To this aim, a multi-step semi-synthetic approach, relying upon tailored sequence of regioselective protection, sulfation and deprotection steps, was employed in this work.

Article Synopsis
  • This study is about creating new surfaces for a technique called capillary electrophoresis (CE) that helps analyze proteins better.
  • The new surfaces are designed to reduce problems like proteins sticking to the walls of the tube and help control how the fluid flows.
  • The researchers tested these new surfaces with different proteins and found that they worked better than older methods by allowing for better control and less unwanted interactions.

The pathological outcome of dengue disease results from complex interactions between dengue virus (DENV) and host genetics and immune response. Complement receptor types 1 and 2 (CR1 and CR2) mediate complement activation through the alternative pathway. This study investigated the possible association of genetic polymorphisms and plasma levels of CR1 and CR2 with dengue disease.

Aim: The current study investigated the plasma levels of angiopoietin-1/-2 and their association with clinical outcomes of sepsis.

Methods: Angiopoietin-1 and -2 levels were quantified in plasma from 105 patients with severe sepsis by ELISA.

Results: Angiopoietin-2 levels elevated according to the severity of sepsis progression.

In the context of research on children's life satisfaction, considering children as active participants are very scarce, the main purpose of the present study was to examine children's perspectives on their life satisfaction. The study used a convenient sample of 228 students from primary and secondary schools, living in urban and suburban areas in Vietnam. The subjects' average age is 9.

Article Synopsis
  • A new "one-pot" method has been developed to control the growth and arrangement of Prussian blue nanostructures on three types of surfaces, including pure gold and SiO-supported lipid bilayers.
  • The size and shape of these nanostructures can be finely tuned by adjusting parameters like precursor concentration and the type of surface functional groups or lipids used.
  • Notably, the Prussian blue nanoparticles on gold surfaces demonstrate effective photothermal properties, allowing for a rapid temperature rise of nearly 90 °C when exposed to laser power, achieving a conversion efficiency of about 50%.

Vietnam is a rabies-endemic country where eating dog meat is customary. However, the risks of rabies transmission to dog slaughtering and processing workers have not been identified. This study aimed to determine the rabies neutralizing antibody (NTA) and risk factors in dog slaughterers to propose appropriate intervention methods for this occupational group.

The study aimed to determine the status of neutralizing antibodies and rabies virus infection in dogs at slaughterhouses in Hanoi city from 2015 to 2017. A total of 2,376 pairs of blood and brain samples were collected from dogs at 92 slaughterhouses (8 large slaughterhouses and 84 small slaughterhouses) in 6 districts in Hanoi. Of the 1,500 dog samples from the large slaughterhouses where imported dogs were slaughtered, no dog brain samples were infected with rabies virus and no blood samples were positive for rabies neutralizing antibodies.

The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria acts as an initial diffusion barrier that shields the cell from the environment. It contains many membrane-embedded proteins required for functionality of this system. These proteins serve as solute and lipid transporters or as machines for membrane insertion or secretion of proteins.

The complement system may be crucial during dengue virus infection and progression to severe dengue. This study investigates the role of MBL2 genetic variants and levels of MBL in serum and complement proteins in Vietnamese dengue patients. MBL2 genotypes (- 550L/H, MBL2 codon 54), MBL2 diplotypes (XA/XO, YA/XO) and MBL2 haplotypes (LXPB, HXPA, XO) were associated with dengue in the study population.

Lipopolysaccharides are central elements of the outer leaflet of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and as such, of cyanobacteria. In the past, the structural analysis of the system in proteobacteria like Escherichia coli has contributed to a deep understanding of the transport of lipopolysaccharides from plasma membrane to the outer membrane. While many components of the transport system are conserved between proteobacteria and cyanobacteria, the periplasmic LptC appears to be distinct.

The clinical outcome of dengue is due to a complex interplay between dengue virus (DENV) and host immune factors, including complement and cytokine systems. Proinflammatory cytokines are mainly produced by monocytes in response to infectious pathogens. This study investigated the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and IL-12 in Vietnamese patients with dengue, and their correlations with the clinical outcome of dengue infection in 156 patients clinically classified as dengue without warning signs (DWS-,  = 87), dengue with warning signs (DWS+,  = 62), and severe dengue (SD,  = 7) patients as well as in 60 healthy controls (HCs).

Background And Objective: The human ficolin-2, encoded by FCN2, recognizes pathogen-associated acetylated residues on their cell surfaces and activates the lectin complement cascade. This study aimed to investigate the contribution of human ficolin-2 and the functional FCN2 genetic variants in dengue virus (DENV) infection and in clinical progression.

Methods: FCN2 genetic polymorphisms in the promoter, intron 7 and exon 8 were genotyped in 279 patients with dengue fever and in 200 healthy controls by direct Sanger sequencing.

β-barrel-shaped outer membrane proteins (OMPs) ensure regulated exchange of molecules across the cell-wall of Gram-negative bacteria. They are synthesized in the cytoplasm and translocated across the plasma membrane via the SEC translocon. In the periplasm, several proteins participate in the transfer of OMPs to the outer membrane-localized complex catalyzing their insertion.

Unlabelled: Filamentous, heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria exchange nutrients and regulators between cells for diazotrophic growth. Two alternative modes of exchange have been discussed involving transport either through the periplasm or through septal junctions linking adjacent cells. Septal junctions and channels in the septal peptidoglycan are likely filled with septal junction complexes.

Rapid and easy determination of protective neutralization antibody (NAb) against rabies in the field is very important for an early and effective response to rabies in both animal and human health sectors. The rapid neutralizing antibody detection test (RAPINA), first developed in 2009 and then improved in 2012, is a quick test allowing detection of 0.5 IU/ml antibodies in human and animal sera or plasma.
