Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents a heterogeneous group of cognitive disturbances at high risk of dementia. The amnestic subtype (aMCI) might be a prodromal state of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study is the identification, by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS), of modifications in brain metabolites able to detect subjects with aMCI at risk of conversion towards AD.

The present study was aimed at investigating changes in brain metabolites due to visual cortex activation in migraineurs and normal subjects by (1)H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Twenty-two migraine patients with aura, 22 migraine patients without aura, and 10 control subjects were assessed. The volume of interest (about 8 cm(3)) was placed on the visual cortex area and the visual stimulus was applied using MR-compatible goggles with a flashing red light at a frequency of 8 Hz and an intensity of 14 lx.

Background And Purpose: Generally, the prognosis for cervical artery dissection (CAD) is uncertain. The recanalization rate of CAD can be up to 85% within 3 months. This study evaluates the variables that might affect recanalization and the role of recanalization as a predictor for neurological outcome.

Article Synopsis
  • Carotid endarterectomy (CE) is beneficial for patients with symptomatic high-grade internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis, particularly when ultrasound suggests stenosis of 70-99%, though cases of near-occlusion can still benefit from CE.
  • This study evaluated how angiography affects treatment decisions for patients with diagnosed ICA stenosis and explored the potential of ultrasound-diagnosed occlusions possibly being patent and suitable for CE.
  • Among the 133 patients studied, angiography confirmed stenosis levels and revealed significant rates of intracranial artery disease, leading to a better understanding of treatment needs and risks for those diagnosed with ICA issues.

Atherosclerotic lesions of the extracranial cerebral arteries account for ischemic stroke in over half of all cases. The risk of stroke associated with symptomatic carotid artery disease is related to the severity of the stenosis. Results of the two major clinical trials, North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET) and European Carotid Surgery Trial (ECST), showed that patients with symptomatic carotid artery disease may benefit from carotid endarterectomy.

Objectives: Hypertension is a risk factor for dementia and is associated with some of the brain changes that are found in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, such as atrophy and neurofibrillary tangles. We evaluated the cerebral white matter biochemical pattern in healthy older subjects, older patients with chronic hypertension, and patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS).

Design: Cross-sectional study.
