The study of pathogenicity and virulence of fungal strains, in vivo in the preclinical phase, is carried out through the use of animal models belonging to various classes of mammals (rodents, leproids, etc.). Although animals are functionally more similar to humans, these studies have some limitations in terms of ethics (animal suffering), user-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, timing (physiological response time) and logistics (need for adequately equipped laboratories).

Background And Aim: Managing gastric variceal (GV) hemorrhage is more complicated than managing esophageal variceal (EV) bleeding, resulting in significantly higher morbidity and mortality. We aim to compare the outcomes of endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL), transhepatic intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), and balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) in the management of GV bleeding.

Methods: We utilized the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from January 2016 to December 2019 to include adult patients with GV hemorrhage.

Background: The ideal temperature for hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA) during acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) repair has yet to be determined. We examined the clinical impact of different degrees of hypothermia during dissection repair.

Methods: Out of 240 cases of ATAAD between June 2014 and December 2019, 228 patients were divided into two groups according to lowest intraoperative temperature: moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest (MHCA) (20-28°C) versus deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) (<20°C).

Background: Perioperative bleeding and transfusion have been associated with adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery. The use of factor eight inhibiting bypass activity (FEIBA) in managing bleeding after repair of acute Stanford type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) has not previously been evaluated. We report our experience in utilizing FEIBA in ATAAD repair.

Dimensionality plays a key role in the emergence of ordered phases, such as charge density-waves (CDW), which can couple to, and modulate, the topological properties of matter. In this work, we study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the paradigmatic quasi-one-dimensional material (TaSe)I, which exhibits a transition into an incommensurate CDW phase when cooled to just below room temperature, namely at = 263 K. We make use of both optical laser and free-electron laser (FEL) based time-resolved spectroscopies in order to study the effect of a selective excitation on the normal-state and on the CDW phases by probing the near-infrared/visible optical properties both along and perpendicularly to the direction of the CDW, where the system is metallic and insulating, respectively.

In order to determine the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), we retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 1,430 patients in a large tertiary health care network in New York. These patients underwent liver biopsy over a 10-year period and were included in our study if they had evidence of NAFLD/NASH on liver biopsy. Zip codes were used to obtain data necessary to derive the social deprivation index (SDI) from the US Bureau of the Census.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has swept through nations, crippled economies and caused millions of deaths worldwide. Many people diagnosed with COVID-19 infections are often found to develop liver injury, which, in a small portion of patients, progresses to severe liver disease. Liver injury in the form of elevated transaminases, hyperbilirubinemia and alterations in serum albumin has been observed to be higher in patients with severe forms of the disease.

Background: Time of day has been associated with adverse outcomes in certain surgical pathologies. Because acute type A aortic dissection typically mandates immediate repair, relatively little attention has been paid to the potential impact of the day-night timing of the operation itself. We sought to determine whether patients with acute dissection treated during typical working hours demonstrated a difference in outcomes compared with those who required surgery after hours.
