Article Synopsis
  • Long COVID is a significant public health issue affecting many individuals, with this study aiming to identify predictors of its development and specific symptoms over time.
  • The study involved over 1,000 hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Italy, using structured phone questionnaires to assess long COVID incidence and symptoms after a median follow-up of 19 months.
  • Results indicated that 91.7% experienced long COVID, particularly affecting respiratory and neurological systems, with vaccination reducing symptom odds and Delta variant infection greatly increasing the risk for neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Single sided deafness (SSD) is characterized by significant sensorineural hearing loss, severe or profound, in only one ear. SSD adversely affects various aspects of auditory perception, including causing impairment in sound localization, difficulties with speech comprehension in noisy environments, and decreased spatial awareness, resulting in a significant decline in overall quality of life (QoL). Several treatment options are available for SSD, including cochlear implants (CI), contralateral routing of signal (CROS), and bone conduction devices (BCD).

Introduction: Tinnitus is the perception of a sound in the absence of any corresponding external sound source. Current research suggests a relationship among emotional, cognitive, and psychosomatic symptoms and the occurrence or maintenance of chronic tinnitus. This study aimed to detect the prevalence and role of psychosomatic conditions, as defined by the Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research (DCPR), and cognitive functioning in a group of patients with tinnitus.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is defined as a sensorineural hearing loss of 30 dB or greater on at least three contiguous audiometric frequencies occurring within a 72 h period. Although SSNHL is commonly encountered in clinical audiology and otolaryngology practice, its etiopathogenesis continues to be poorly understood. Scientific investigations have highlighted the vulnerability of cochlear microcirculation to blood flow alterations.

Approximately 80-96% of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) become unable to speak during the disease progression. Assessing upper and lower motor neuron impairment in bulbar regions of ALS patients remains challenging, particularly in distinguishing spastic and flaccid dysarthria. This study aimed to evaluate acoustic voice parameters as useful biomarkers to discriminate ALS clinical phenotypes.

Background: Tinnitus is a frequent symptom in cochlear implant (CI) patients. Many studies have shown that a CI leads to a significant change in the perception of tinnitus.

Aims: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of CI on tinnitus in patients with Unilateral Cochlear Implant (UCI), Bilateral Cochlear Implant (BCI), and Bimodal Stimulation (BMS).

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly spread through Europe in the first months of 2020. On the 9th of March 2020, the Italian government ordered a national lock-down. The study's objectives were: to investigate the effect of lockdown on CI users; and to detect the difference in the perception of discomfort existing between unilateral cochlear implant (UCI) users and bilateral cochlear implant (BCI) users, due to the lockdown experience.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) usually has a favorable course, although it is possible to observe BPPV with a high recurrence rate. Previous studies suggested that vitamin D deficiency might affect BPPV recurrences, and oxidative stress might play a complementary role in BPPV pathogenesis. This multicentric trial aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral nutritional supplementation with a compound of alpha-lipoic acid, Carnosine, and Zinc (LICA® (Difass International, Coriano (RN), Italy)), vitamins of group B and vitamin D in preventing BPPV recurrences.

Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate the presence of dysphagia in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and to correlate swallowing impairment with hypnologic and anatomic parameters.

Methods: The study population includes 36 patients suffering from OSA. Patients were divided into two groups using the presence of dysphagia as a distinctive parameter.

Objective: The purpose of our study was to investigate the impact of surgical mask on some vocal parameters such as F0, vocal intensity, jitter, shimmer and harmonics-to-noise ratio in order to understand how surgical mask can affect voice and verbal communication in adults.

Methods: The study was carried out on a selected group of 60 healthy subjects. All subjects were trained to voice a vocal sample of a sustained /a/, at a conversational voice intensity for the Maximum Phonation Time (MPT), wearing the surgical mask and then without wearing the surgical mask.

Objective: Among the different procedures used by the ENT, acoustic analysis of voice has become widely used for correct diagnosis of dysphonia. The instrumental measurements of acoustic parameters were limited during the COVID-19 pandemic by the common belief that a face mask affects the results of the analysis. The purpose of our study was to investigate the impact of surgical masks on F0, jitter, shimmer and harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) in adults.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the presence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) and the impact of MetS on recovery of patients with ISSHL. 39 Patients with ISSHL and 44 controls were enrolled in this study. Demographic, clinical characteristics and hearing recovery were evaluated.
