Non-linear finite element modeling of damages in bridge piers subjected to lateral monotonic loading.

Bridges are among the most vulnerable structures to earthquake damage. Most bridges are seismically inadequate due to outdated bridge design codes and poor construction methods in developing countries. Although expensive, experimental studies are useful in evaluating bridge piers.

Management and outcome of post-myocardial infarction ventricular septal rupture-A Low-Middle-Income Country Experience.

Background: Ventricular septal rupture (VSR) is a rare complication after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) especially in the reperfusion era but its associated mortality has remained high. This case series evaluated in-hospital and intermediate-term mortality in VSR patients. Additionally, we also analyzed risk factors, clinical presentation, intervention, and predictors of in-hospital mortality in VSR patients.

Repair of ascending aortic pseudoaneurysm eroding through the sternum.

In reoperation for an ascending aortic pseudoaneurysm eroding through the sternum, a left ventricular vent allows careful unhurried sternal division under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. We repaired ascending aortic pseudoaneurysms in 2 patients who had undergone aortic valve implantation 6 and 21 months earlier. A minithoracotomy was made in the left 5th intercostal space, and a vent was placed in the left ventricular apex.

Hydatid cyst of the cardiac interventricular septum.

Hydatid cysts of the cardiac interventricular septum are rare and present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We report the case of a 48-year-old woman who was successfully treated with cyst excision and capitonnage.

A novel method of surgical site infection surveillance after cardiac surgery by active participation of stake holders.

We describe a comprehensive surveillance system involving infection control practitioners, surgeons, administrative staff, and patients aimed at improving the postdischarge surveillance of surgical site infections. The system was able to detect 22 infections out of 538 procedures, 95% of which were detected during the postdischarge period.

Biatrial myxoma.

A female, 32 years of age, presented with complaint of easy fatigability and exertional dyspnoea for the last one year. She had no previous history of cardiac disease. On clinical examination, there was a diastolic murmur at apex.

Complicated unroofed coronary sinus syndrome.

A young boy planned for the surgical closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) and mitral valve regurgitation (MR) was found peroperatively as having a complete unroofed coronary sinus (URCS). Intracardiac re-routing of left superior vena cava (LSVC) and mitral valve replacement (MVR) were performed concomitantly with success.
