Background: The aim of the study was to determine the predictors of discharge timing and 90-day unplanned readmission after laparoscopic liver resection (LLR).

Methods: Consecutive LLR performed at the "Institut Mutualiste Montsouris" between 2000 and 2019 were retrieved from a prospectively maintained database. Length of stay (LOS) was stratified according to surgical difficulty and was categorized as early (LOS<25th percentile), routine (25th percentile<75th percentile), and delayed discharge otherwise.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to validate the Institut Mutualiste Montsouris (IMM) classification system for measuring difficulty levels in laparoscopic repeat liver resections and to identify factors that lead to unexpected challenges during procedures.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 205 patients between 2000 and 2019, using robust statistical methods to assess the impact of various factors on surgery outcomes, including blood loss, operation time, and complications.
  • Findings showed that the IMM classification was significantly linked to surgery difficulty and complications, with specific factors like having a first major liver surgery or sinusoidal obstruction syndrome also increasing difficulty and reducing the chances of optimal outcomes.
