Introduction: Recent evidence suggests the relationship between periodontitis and systemic inflammation, which complete blood count can assess (CBC)-derived biomarkers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). We conducted this meta-analysis to evaluate the levels of NLR and PLR of patients with periodontitis compared to those of healthy controls.  METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Open Grey were searched for studies published before October 20, 2024, without any limitation on date and language; then, using the random-effects model, we reported a standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI).

Background: In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL) have made a considerable impact in dentistry, specifically in advancing image processing algorithms for detecting caries from radiographical images. Despite this progress, there is still a lack of data on the effectiveness of these algorithms in accurately identifying caries. This study provides an overview aimed at evaluating and comparing reviews that focus on the detection of using DL algorithms from 2D radiographs.

In the cancer early detection field, logistic regression is a frequently used approach to establish a combination rule that differentiates cancer from non-cancer. However, the application of logistic regression relies on a maximum likelihood approach, which may not yield optimal combination rules for maximizing sensitivity at a clinically desirable specificity and vice versa. Here, we have developed an improved regression framework, Sensitivity Maximization At a Given Specificity, SMAGS, for binary classification that finds the linear decision rule yielding the maximum sensitivity for a given specificity or the maximum specificity for a given sensitivity.

  • The study compares the effectiveness and safety of a 5% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution to cryotherapy for treating genital warts, seeking a noninvasive and cost-effective option.
  • Both treatments were tested on 98 patients, with follow-ups over 12 weeks to assess recovery time and side effects.
  • Results showed no significant differences in treatment response, relapse rates, or side effects between the two methods, indicating that KOH and cryotherapy have similar efficacy and safety.

Background: Disease mapping has a long history in epidemiology. Evaluating the spatial pattern of several diseases, as well as shared and specific risk factors in mortality, is considered one of the applications of disease mapping. Stomach, esophageal, and lung cancers are among the five most common cancers among both genders in Iran.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical outcome scores of an arthroscopic margin convergence technique without the use of suture anchors to repair different types of rotator cuff tears and to determine whether the type or extent of the tear has an effect on clinical outcome scores after this procedure.

Methods: Patients receiving arthroscopic margin convergence repair without suture anchors for rotator cuff tears from 2013 to 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Arthroscopically determined partial- or full-thickness rotator cuff tears with a minimum follow-up period of 20 months were included.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is accompanied by psychiatric disorders, including Schizophrenic-like manifestations. Although incompletely illustrated, intestinal mucosal membrane damage and blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetrability may have significant roles in psychiatric symptoms of IBD. This study aimed to investigate role of the Claudin-5 (CLDN5) (a regulator of the permeability of BBB) and neuroinflammatory response in the comorbid behavioral disorders in experimental colitis in mice.

  • Scientists are using artificial intelligence (AI) to help dentists find fractures in the jaw by looking at special X-ray images.
  • A study looked at many research papers and found that AI can be pretty good at spotting these fractures, but only five studies were reliable enough to include in this review.
  • The results show that while AI can be useful, there needs to be more research with bigger and different sets of X-ray images to make sure it works well in real dental offices.

  • Recent AI tools like ChatGPT are changing healthcare and education, and this study checked how well ChatGPT did on dental exam questions.
  • ChatGPT 3.5 and 4 were tested on various U.S. dental exams, showing good accuracy, especially ChatGPT 4, which did really well on the DAT exam.
  • Both versions handled most questions well, but they struggled with math questions, meaning there's room for improvement in that area.

The capped CdS-ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized with various thiol capping agents of glycolic acid (TGA), mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA), and L-cysteine (LCY) and used as fluorescence probe for determination of Cu (II) ions. The method of two-level three-factor full-factorial experiment design was used to achieve the best optical fluorescence emission. Results revealed that Cu (II) ions can effectively quench the emission of QDs, and the fluorescence intensity is linearly decreased with increasing Cu (II) ion concentration.

  • - Paraquat (PQ) is a toxic herbicide that can cause serious lung issues, but Crocus sativus (Cs) has shown promise for treating related respiratory problems due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  • - This study aimed to assess how Cs extract and pioglitazone (Pio) can prevent lung damage and inflammation caused by PQ exposure in rats, comparing their effects to dexamethasone (Dexa).
  • - Results indicated that treatments with both Cs and Pio improved lung health and function, with the combination showing the most significant benefits, suggesting Cs could be a viable alternative to traditional treatments like Dexa.

  • A study in the UK showed that using CA125 blood tests and ultrasound for ovarian cancer didn't really lower deaths but helped find earlier cases.
  • Researchers tested blood samples from women with ovarian cancer and controls to create a new test using 7 specific chemicals plus CA125.
  • This new test was better at finding early-stage ovarian cancer, catching a good number of cases even when CA125 levels were low.
