Article Synopsis
  • Biologics and oral small molecules (OSM) are effective treatments for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but concern exists over their potential to increase risks of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and venous thromboembolism (VTE).
  • Using a multi-institutional database, the study matched IBD patients on biologics and OSM with similar patients not on these treatments to assess MACE and VTE risks from 30 days to 3 years post-prescription.
  • Results indicated that biologic-treated IBD patients had lower risks of MACE and VTE after 1 and 3 years, while OSM users showed reduced all-cause mortality but no significant difference in MACE or VTE risks, suggesting

Background: The impact of COVID-19 on pregnancy remains a critical area of research, with growing evidence suggesting that maternal infection, particularly in the third trimester, may lead to significant complications Aims: The primary aim was to investigate the maternal and neonatal outcome of pregnant Jordanian women with COVID-19. The secondary aim included exploring demographics, obstetrics characteristics, and comorbidities among these women.

Methods: A retrospective comprehensive review of the records of 300 cases of pregnant women with COVID-19, who were treated between November 2020 and April 2021 at Queen Alia Military Hospital (a main referral center for patients with COVID-19) in Jordan.

Aims: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are the cornerstone of modern oncology; however, side effects such as ICI-related myocarditis (irM) can be fatal. Recently, Bonaca proposed criteria for irM; however, it is unknown if they correlate well with cardiovascular (CV) ICI-related adverse events. Additionally, whether incident irM portends worse long-term CV outcomes remains unclear.

Fibrinolytic and coagulative hyperactivity is proven to have a role in liquefaction and progression of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). Tranexamic acid was one of the pharmaceutical options that was explored, as it inhibits the hyper-fibrinolytic activity and reduces the vascular permeability in CSDH, leading to a gradual resolution of the hematoma. In this case study, we present a case of using tranexamic acid for CSDH treatment in an 86-year-old patient with co-morbidities.

: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant global impact, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of its spatiotemporal patterns. The objective of this study is to explore the spatial and temporal patterns of COVID-19 infections among five age groups (<1, 1-4, 5-9, 10-14, and 15-19 years) in 72 districts of Slovakia on a quarterly basis from March 2020 to July 2022. : During the study period, a total of 393,429 confirmed PCR cases of COVID-19 or positive antigen tests were recorded across all studied age groups.

In patients with cardiac amyloidosis, pericardial involvement is common, with up to half of patients presenting with pericardial effusions. The pathophysiological mechanisms of pericardial pathology in cardiac amyloidosis include chronic elevations in right-sided filling pressures, myocardial and pericardial inflammation due to cytotoxic effects of amyloid deposits, and renal involvement with subsequent uremia and hypoalbuminemia. The pericardial effusions are typically small; however, several cases of life-threatening cardiac tamponade with hemorrhagic effusions have been described as a presenting clinical scenario.

Article Synopsis
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a major public health issue, particularly with mild-to-moderate cases being common, highlighting the need to understand mortality predictors in these patients.
  • This literature review analyzes various factors influencing mortality, including age, Glasgow Coma Scale scores, intracranial hemorrhage, pupillary responses, and pre-existing health issues.
  • The findings aim to equip clinicians and researchers with insights to improve decision-making and interventions for better outcomes in adult patients with mild-to-moderate TBIs.

Purpose: Intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation is a surgical technique developed with the purpose of avoiding the progression of corneal protrusion and is considered a viable option for managing patients with keratoconus as it stabilizes or improves vision thus delaying or excluding the need of more advanced surgical intervention such as penetrating keratoplasty. However, long term follow up is still limited to determine its actual success in achieving this goal. The current project aims to provide an extended follow up reporting a mean followup of around 5 years, extending up to 12.

Background: Traumatic hyphema is the entry of blood into the anterior chamber, the space between the cornea and iris, following significant injury to the eye. Hyphema may be associated with significant complications that uncommonly cause permanent vision loss. Complications include elevated intraocular pressure, corneal blood staining, anterior and posterior synechiae, and optic nerve atrophy.

Background: Many metagenomic studies have linked the imbalance in microbial abundance profiles to a wide range of diseases. These studies suggest utilizing the microbial abundance profiles as potential markers for metagenomic-associated conditions. Due to the inevitable importance of biomarkers in understanding the disease progression and the development of possible therapies, various computational tools have been proposed for metagenomic biomarker detection.

Background: Hilgenreiner brace (Hb) was developed to improve hip reduction rate and reduce the incidence of femoral head avascular necrosis (AVN). In children under the age of 18 months with unstable hip joints or a dislocated hip joint, the treatment method involves nonsurgical treatment in most cases.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of traction, closed reduction, and hip fixation in Hb in patients with severe forms of hip developmental dysplasia (DDH) in follow-up.

Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is the most common venous anomaly of the thorax that usually coexists with the right superior vena cava. However, in a minority of cases, there is only a PLSVC without a right superior vena cava which is called an isolated PLSVC. There are some reported anomalies that can co-occur with PLSVC; yet, none have reported an association with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).

Electrochemical migration (ECM) forming dendritic short circuits is a major reliability limiting factor in microcircuits. Gold, which is a noble metal, has been regarded as a metallization that can withstand corrosion and also ECM, therefore its application in high-reliability metallization and surface finishing systems became widespread although it has a relatively high and fluctuating price. Gold electrochemical short circuits have been found only in the case of halogen (e.
