Background And Objectives: Single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SPLC) was introduced to improve patients' postoperative quality of life and cosmesis over the conventional approach (CLC). The purpose of this case-control study was to compare the outcome of SPLC with that of CLC in a specific disease: gall bladder (GB) polyps.

Methods: Eligible for the study were all patients with GB polyps who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy between June 1, 2009, and June 30, 2011.

Objective: The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of PTBD in patients with DSL and ALS post-gastrectomy for malignancy or benign ulcer perforation.

Summary Of Background Data: Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) is an interventional radiologic procedure used to promote bile drainage. Duodenal stump leakage (DSL) and afferent loop syndrome (ALS) can be serious complications after gastrectomy.

Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopy-assisted total gastrectomy (LATG) for gastric cancer compared to conventional open total gastrectomy (COTG) with a case-control study.

Methods: Between January 2002 and December 2010, a series of 264 patients with gastric cancer underwent R0 total gastrectomy (61 LATG patients and 203 COTG patients). Age, gender, and pathological stage were matched by propensity scoring, and 120 patients (60 LATG and 60 COTG) were selected for analysis.

Purpose: We sought to evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of laparoscopic resection of giant hepatic cysts and surgical success, focusing on cyst recurrence.

Methods: From February 2004 to August 2011, 37 consecutive patients with symptomatic hepatic cysts were evaluated and treated at Dong-A University Hospital. Indications were simple cysts (n = 20), multiple cysts (n = 6), polycystic disease (n = 2), and cystadenoma (n = 9).

Fascin is an actin-binding protein that provides mechanical support and cell motility, and involves cancer cell metastasis. We investigated fascin protein expression in gastric cancer and assessed their relationship with clinicopathologic parameters and survival rates. In addition, we researched galectin-3 protein expression to study fascin action mechanisms.

Purpose: Gastric surgery may potentiate delayed gastric emptying. Billroth I gastroduodenostomy using a circular stapler is the most preferable reconstruction method. The purpose of this study is to analyze the risk factors associated with delayed gastric emptying after radical subtotal gastrectomy with Billroth I anastomosis using a stapler for early gastric cancer.

Purpose: Hepatobiliary surgery has changed dramatically in recent decades with the advent of laparoscopic techniques. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare survival rates according to stages, adjusting for important prognostic factors.

Methods: A retrospective study of a 17-year period from January 1994 to April 2011 was carried out.

Purpose: Mechanical stapler is regarded as a good alternative to the hand sewing technique, when used in gastric reconstruction. The circular stapling method has been widely applied to gastrectomy (open orlaparoscopic), for gastric cancer. We illustrated and compared the hand-sutured method to the circular stapling method, for Billroth-II, in patients who underwent laparoscopy assisted distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Purpose: Recently, laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy (LAG) has been widely accepted modality for early gastric cancer in Korea. The indication of LAG may be extended in an experienced institution. In our institution, the first case of laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy (LAG) for gastric cancer was performed in May 1998.

Purpose: Single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SPLC) is a new advanced technique in laparoscopic surgery. Many laparoscopic surgeons seek to gain skill in this new technique. However, little data has been accumulated and published formally yet.

Background/aims: The aim of this prospective trial was to observe the results of the two types of techniques.

Methodology: Single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SPLC) (56 cases) indication was polyp disease and mild cholecystitis with gall bladder stone (no right upper quadrant tenderness in physical examination, no gall bladder wall thickening in image study). Three ports laparoscopic cholecystectomy (TPLC) (46 cases) was applied to previous laparoscopic surgery indication.

Primary splenic tumors are rare and mainly found incidentally on radiologic studies. Among them, sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) of the spleen is a new entity defined as a benign pathologic lesion. Most SANTs have no clinical symptoms and are occasionally accompanied by other splenic diseases such as malignancies.

Purpose: Laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) is now widely accepted and is being increasingly performed. The present study describes our experience with LLR at a single center over an eight-year period.

Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 100 patients between October 2002 and February 2010.

Purpose: Curative surgery for patients with advanced or even early gastric cancer can be defined as resection of the stomach and dissection of the first and second level lymph nodes, including the greater omentum. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short- and long- term outcomes of partial omentectomy (PO) as compared with complete omentectomy (CO).

Materials And Methods: Seventeen consecutive open distal gastrectomies with POs were initially performed between February and July in 2006.

Background/aims: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the gold standard modality for treating gallbladder disease. There are many techniques for the ligation of a dilated and inflamed cystic duct. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy and applicability of an Endo-GIA for dilated cystic duct ligation.

Objective: Although there have been many reports regarding clinical outcomes of endoscopic treatment for early gastric cancer (EGC), little is known about detection of recurrence after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). This study aims to clarify the clinical value of serological marker or imaging tools, including conventional CT and PET-CT scans, in detecting recurrent gastric cancer after ESD in Korea.

Material And Methods: From July 2004 to March 2008, 212 patients who had received ESD for EGC were enrolled in the study.

A 53-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for the evaluation of a mass (13 x 10 cm) in the left lobe of the liver seen by imaging studies. On subsequent biopsy of the mass, the lesion was histologically diagnosed as malignant small round-cell tumor, consistent with metastatic small-cell carcinoma. Segment IV segmentectomy was performed.

Background/aims: The sentinel lymph node (SLN) is defined as the first draining node from the primary lesion. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of SLN biopsy in patients with gastric cancer for assessment of lymph node status.

Methodology: From November 2001 through to July 2002, SLN biopsy was performed in twenty-two consecutive patients whose preoperative imaging studies showed T2 or T1 and no lymph node metastasis.

Background/aims: cDNA microarray provides a powerful alternative with an unprecedented view scope in monitoring gene expression levels and leads to discoveries of regulatory pathways involved in complicated biological processes. Our aim was to explore the different gene expression patterns in early and advanced gastric cancer.

Methods: By using a cDNA microarray representing 4,608 cDNA clusters, we studied the expression profiling in 10 paired gastric adenocarcinoma samples and the adjacent noncancerous gastric tissues.

Objective: To determine the efficacy of portal thrombendvenectomy in cases of portal vein thrombosis at the time of orthotopic liver transplantation.

Summary Background Data: Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) has been reported to have an incidence of 2% to 39% in end-stage liver disease. Multiple techniques have been suggested to treat this finding.
