Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common gastrointestinal cancer, and even though oxaliplatin chemotherapy is effective, there is a high likelihood of relapse, indicating the presence of oxaliplatin-resistant CRC. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend the molecular mechanisms of oxaliplatin resistance and develop effective strategies to counter drug resistance. Numerous studies have demonstrated the close association between microRNAs (miRNAs) and drug resistance in CRC.

Article Synopsis
  • Research identifies Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI) as a significant indicator of future dementia risk in cognitively healthy individuals, distinguishing it from other neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS).
  • The study used data from the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center to compare three groups: those with MBI, those with NPS not classified as MBI, and those with no NPS, finding that MBI participants exhibited a much higher risk of developing dementia.
  • Among individuals with MBI, there was a notable trend toward Alzheimer's disease, specifically highlighting a greater dementia incidence in those experiencing subjective cognitive decline compared to those without NPS.

Introduction: Processes that generate systemic inflammation are strongly associated with neurodegenerative diseases. This study aimed to explore the potential anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of fasudil and its role in modulating aquaporin-4 (AQP-4) to improve cognitive impairment in a systemic inflammation model induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Method: fourty C57BL/6 mice were assigned to four groups, including sham, LPS, sham+fasudil, and LPS+fasudil).

The presence of antibiotic pollutants in water and wastewater can cause significant risks to the environment in different aspects. Therefore, antibiotics need to be removed from water. This study investigates the adsorption of nalidixic acid (NA), a common antibiotic, using bovine serum albumin nanoparticles (BSA NPs).

Measurement of the relative positions of two objects in three dimensions with sub-nanometer precision is essential to fundamental physics experiments and applications such as aligning multi-layer patterns of semiconductor chips. Existing methods, which rely on microscopic imaging and registration of distant patterns, lack the required accuracy and precision for the next generation of three-dimensional (3D) chips. Here we show that 3D misalignment between two distant objects can be measured using metasurface alignment marks, a laser, and a camera with sub-nanometer precision.

One of the critical challenges in managing colorectal cancer (CRC) is the development of oxaliplatin (OXP) resistance. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have a crucial role in CRC progression and chemotherapy resistance, with exosomal lncRNAs emerging as potential biomarkers. This study aimed to predict key lncRNAs involved in OXP-resistance using in-silico methods and validate them using RT-qPCR methods in CRC cells and their isolated exosomes.

Background Acquired resistance to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) frequently results in chemotherapy failure and disease recurrence in advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Research has demonstrated that dysregulation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) mediates the development of chemotherapy resistance in cancerous cells. The present study aims to identify key lncRNAs associated with 5-FU resistance in CRC using bioinformatic and experimental validation approaches.

The gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) has long been recognized for its therapeutic potential in treating various intestinal diseases. Bacterial ghosts (BGs) are empty shells of non-living bacterial cells that demonstrate enormous potential for medicinal applications. Genetic and chemical techniques can create these BGs.

  • This study explored the use of chitosan/alginate nanoparticles with recombinant human bone morphogenetic-2 (rhBMP-2) and a plasmid for enhancing cartilage formation from human bone marrow stem cells.
  • The stem cells were treated with various combinations of biological agents, and the effectiveness was measured using gene expression analysis and staining techniques.
  • Results showed the biological cocktail (BC) significantly boosted cartilage-related gene expression compared to other treatments, indicating its potential for improving cartilage regeneration.

The use of NPS compounds is increasing, and impairment in spatial learning and memory is a growing concern. Alpha-pyrrolidinovalerophenone (α-PVP) consumption, as a commonly used NPS, can impair spatial learning and memory via the brain mitochondrial dysfunction mechanism. Liraglutide isone of the most well-known Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists that is used as an anti-diabetic and anti-obesity drug.

The dissolution of soluble rocks (gypsum/anhydrite) beneath the Mosul Dam by water seepage has been observed upon the initial impoundment; consequently, several sinkholes have been manifested in the vicinity of the dam site. Traditional grouting has been envisaged as a potential remedy; however this measure has not eradicated the problem. The main purpose of this study is to overcome the solubility of the gypsum/anhydrite rocks using chemical grouts.

Background: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience changes in behavior, personality, and cognition that can manifest even in the initial stages of the disease. Previous studies have suggested that mild behavioral impairment (MBI) should be considered an early marker of cognitive decline. However, the precise neurostructural underpinnings of MBI in early- to mid-stage PD remain poorly understood.

Although humans are frequently exposed to multiple pollutants simultaneously, research on their harmful effects on health has typically focused on studying each pollutant individually. Inorganic arsenic (As) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) are well-known pollutants with carcinogenic potential, but their co-exposure effects on breast cancer cell progression remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to assess the combined impact of BaP and As on the viability and migration of MDA-MB-231 cells.

Courage is one of the most significant psychological constructs for society, but not one of the most frequently studied. This paper presents a process model of courage consisting of decision-based pathways by which one comes to enact a courageous action. We argue the process of courage begins with a trigger involving an actor(s) and a situation(s).

Purpose: In the present study, biodegradable poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) nanoparticles (NPs) containing insulin were loaded in sodium alginate/jeffamine (ALG/jeff) hydrogel for prolonged delivery of insulin. The main aim of this work was to fabricate an efficient insulin delivery system to improve patient adherence by decreasing the repetition of injections.

Methods: Swelling and morphological properties and crosslinking efficiency of ALG/jeff hydrogel were assessed.

This research presents a highly accurate and easy-to-implement method to characterize the complex Bloch modes propagating along optical chain waveguides with three-dimensional (3D) layered geometries and dispersive negative-epsilon material compositions. The technique combines commercial EM solver results with analytical post-processing to avoid iterative complex root estimation on the complex plane. The proposed methodology is based on the real-valued computations that yield the complex Bloch wavevector with superior accuracy even when both radiation and material losses are present.

In this study, surface modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were prepared for the targeted delivery of the anticancer agents, daunorubicin (DNR) and cytarabine (CTR), against K562 leukemia cancer cell lines. The MSNs were surface-modified with pH-sensitive chitosan (CS) to prevent the burst release of anticancer agents at the physiological pH of 7.4 and to enable a higher drug release at lower pH and higher concentration of glutathione.

The large coding potential of vaccinia virus (VV) vectors is a defining feature. However, limited regulatory switches are available to control viral replication as well as timing and dosing of transgene expression in order to facilitate safe and efficacious payload delivery. Herein, we adapt drug-controlled gene switches to enable control of virally encoded transgene expression, including systems controlled by the FDA-approved rapamycin and doxycycline.
