The impact of vitamin D supplementation on depressive symptoms remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the dose-dependent effects of vitamin D supplementation on depressive and anxiety symptoms in adults. We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to December 2022 to identify randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of vitamin D supplementation on depression and anxiety symptoms in adults.

Ultra-fast vitrification and rapid elution of human oocytes: Part II - verification of blastocyst development from mature oocytes.

Research Question: Will ultra-fast vitrification (UFV) and rapid elution of mature human oocytes retain the reliable, high survival rates and meiotic spindle normality seen in the germinal vesicle model, and will these oocytes maintain their developmental competence to form blastocyst-stage embryos following artificial oocyte activation (AOA)?

Design: Conventional vitrification treatment was compared with UFV treatment in mature, germinal-vesicle-derived oocytes (Phase 2, Expt. 2, n = 50) and substandard donor oocytes, metaphase I-metaphase II (MII) oocytes and poor-quality MII oocytes (n = 222). Post-warming survival, the integrity of the meiotic spindle and AOA-related development were assessed.

Most studies have focused on estimating discrete postures or forces of the human hand but for a practical prosthetic system, both should be considered. In daily life activities, hand postures vary for grasping different objects and the amount of force exerted on each fingertip depends on the shape and weight of the object.

The impact of host microRNAs on the development of conserved mutations of SARS-CoV-2.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, has undergone various genetic alterations due to evolutionary pressures exerted by host cells, including intracellular antiviral mechanisms such as targeting by human microRNAs (miRNAs). This study investigates the impact of miRNAs hsa-miR-3132 and hsa-miR-4650 on the viral genome. Sequence alignment revealed conserved mutations in the binding sites of these miRNAs in adapted strains compared to the original Wuhan-Hu-1 strain, leading to their deletion.

Cognitive decline and political leadership.

The cognitive deterioration of politicians is a critical emerging issue. As professions including law and medicine develop and implement cognitive assessments, their insights may inform the proper strategy within politics. The aging, lifetime-appointed judiciary raises legal and administrative questions of such assessments, while testing of older physicians experiencing cognitive decline provides real-life examples of implementation.

Dose-response association of obesity and risk of mental health among tehranian residents: result of a cross-sectional study.

Background: Obesity and mental health issues are two of the most prevalent global public health issues for a significant portion of people. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between obesity indicators and mental health in Tehran-dwelling Iranian adults.

This scoping review provides a comprehensive survey of models and data used to predict distribution and abundance in North America. We identified 4661 relevant primary research articles published in English between January 1st, 2012, and July 18th, 2022, and selected 41 articles following full-text review.

Effects of aerobic exercise on blood pressure in patients with hypertension: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized trials.

We aimed to evaluate the dose-dependent effects of aerobic exercise on systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and haemodynamic factors in adults with hypertension. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched to April 2022 for randomized trials of aerobic exercise in adults with hypertension. We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis to estimate mean differences (MDs) and 95%CIs for each 30 min/week increase in aerobic exercise.

MIJ821 (onfasprodil) in healthy volunteers: First-in-human, randomized, placebo-controlled study (single ascending dose and repeated intravenous dose).

This single-center study administered MIJ821 (onfasprodil) as an intravenous infusion to healthy volunteers and included two parts: a single ascending dose study (Part 1) and a repeated intravenous dose study (Part 2). Primary objective was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of single ascending intravenous doses infused over a 40-min period and of two repeated doses (1 week apart) of MIJ821 in healthy volunteers. Secondary objectives were to assess the pharmacokinetics of MIJ821 after intravenous infusion in Part 1 and Part 2 of the study.

Adaptive super-twisting control for leader-following consensus of second-order multi-agent systems based on time-varying gains.

In this paper, robust distributed consensus control is designed based on adaptive time-varying gains for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems (MAS) in the presence of uncertain parameters and external disturbances with unknown upper bounds. Due to various conditions and constraints, different dynamical models for the agents can be considered in practice. On the basis of a continuous homogeneous consensus method which has been proposed for the nominal nonlinear MAS, the discontinuous and continuous adaptive integral sliding mode control strategies are particularly designed and extended to accomplish exact and precise consensus for non-identical MASs influenced by imposed perturbations.

Affective Temperaments Misdiagnosed as Adult Attention Deficit Disorder: Prevalence and Treatment Effects.

Adult attention-deficit disorder (ADD) is a common diagnosis, and amphetamine medications are increasingly used. Recent reports suggest high prevalence of affective temperaments, such as cyclothymia, in adult ADD. This study reexamines prevalence rates as reflecting misdiagnosis and reports for the first time on the effects of amphetamine medications on mood/anxiety and cognition in relation to affective temperaments.

COVID-19 Impact on the Italian Community-based System of Mental Health Care: Reflections and Lessons Learned for the Future.

Despite the unprecedented wave of research and publications sparked by the recent pandemic, only few studies have investigated the impact of COVID-19 on the Italian community-based system of mental health care. We aimed to summarize the available evidence from the literature also considering what we have learned from our daily clinical practice. As hospital care was restricted by COVID-19, although reducing their opening hours and activities, Community Mental Health Centers promoted continuity of care for at-risk populations, supporting them to cope with loneliness and hopelessness during quarantine and self-isolation.

In the Tradition of William Osler: A New Biohumanistic Model of Psychiatry.

William Osler (1849-1919) is often considered the most influential physician in the emergence of science-based medicine. However, his approach to clinical medicine tends to be misunderstood, and its relevance to psychiatry has not been explored systematically. Osler's approach to the patient had four components: biological reductionism about disease, a scientific approach to clinical diagnosis, therapeutic conservatism, and a humanistic approach to the person.

Comparative study of the cytotoxicity, apoptotic, and epigenetic effects of Boswellic acid derivatives on breast cancer.

This study aimed to compare the effect of Boswellic acid derivatives on the viability, apoptosis, and epigenomic profiling of breast cancer. According to the viability assays, 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-Boswellic acid (AKBA) showed more toxicity against MDA-MB-231 cells when compared with the 3-O-acetyl-β-Boswellic acid (ABA). In contrast, ABA revealed less toxicity against MCF-10A.

Clinical research diagnostic criteria for bipolar illness (CRDC-BP): rationale and validity.

Background: In the 1970 s, scientific research on psychiatric nosology was summarized in Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC), based solely on empirical data, an important source for the third revision of the official nomenclature of the American Psychiatric Association in 1980, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Third Edition (DSM-III). The intervening years, especially with the fourth edition in 1994, saw a shift to a more overtly "pragmatic" approach to diagnostic definitions, which were constructed for many purposes, with research evidence being only one consideration. The latest editions have been criticized as failing to be useful for research.

Evaluation of Mutations Related to Streptomycin Resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis Clinical Isolates.

Drug resistance to streptomycin in the clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) needs special consideration. It can mostly be caused by mutations in four genes with the names rpsL, rrs, gidB, and whiB7. The main objective of this study was the evaluation of the type and frequency of mutations in these mentioned genes using the PCR-sequencing method.

Selective anti-cancer activity against melanoma cells using 3--acetyl-β-boswellic acid-loaded 3D-Printed scaffold.

This study aimed to develop a local 3 D-printed bioactive graft using poly-caprolacton (PCL) as a drug carrier and 3--acetyl-β-boswellic acid (β-ABA) as an anticancer compound. β-ABA-loaded 3 D-printed scaffold was fabricated and physically characterized. The results indicated more desirable mechanical and physical properties of the β-ABA-loaded PCL mat in comparison with the PCL scaffold.

Immunology Meets Bioengineering: Improving the Effectiveness of Glioblastoma Immunotherapy.

Glioblastoma (GBM) therapy has seen little change over the past two decades. Surgical excision followed by radiation and chemotherapy is the current gold standard treatment. Immunotherapy techniques have recently transformed many cancer treatments, and GBM is now at the forefront of immunotherapy research.

Symptomatic versus disease-modifying effects of psychiatric drugs.

Objective: Drugs can be divided into two major categories, symptomatic and disease modifying. This review explores whether and how psychiatric drugs fall into one or the other of those categories, and the implications of those results for clinical practice and research in psychopharmacology.
