Background: The management of pregnant women with sickle cell disease (SCD) poses a major challenge for maternal healthcare services owing to the potential for complications associated with morbidity and mortality. Trustworthy evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) have a major impact on the positive outcomes of appropriate healthcare. The objective of this study was to critically appraise the quality of recent CPGs for SCD in pregnant women.

Numerous studies have been published regarding outcomes of cancer patients infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus causing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. However, most of these are single-center studies with a limited number of patients. To better assess the outcomes of this new infection in this subgroup of susceptible patients, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 infection on cancer patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - Post allogenic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a serious, poorly understood condition that typically emerges within the first 2-6 weeks post-transplant, particularly in patients with cord blood donors or HLA mismatches.
  • - This condition is characterized by an excessive immune response (hypercytokinemia) leading to a low survival rate, especially in individuals with liver issues, graft failure, or blood vessel complications.
  • - Treatment primarily involves steroids, with options like cyclosporine and etoposide being explored; more research is needed to establish effective therapies, including the potential use of etoposide-based conditioning reg

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) is often recommended for patients with T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) in second or later complete remission (≥CR2) and sometimes in high-risk (HR) patients in first complete remission (CR1). Between January 1995 and July 2009, 53 patients with HR T-ALL underwent allo-SCT at our institution. Median age was 18 years (range, 14-51).

Telomerase is activated in most tumors, but suppressed in normal human somatic cells. Current evidence indicates that telomerase reactivation is a critical step in carcinogenesis, with a close relationship to apoptosis. The goal of this study was to investigate the levels and relationship of telomerase activity to apoptosis and its impact on the survival of Egyptian adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients.

The prevalence of depression among patients diagnosed with cancer is higher than general population and is associated with faster tumor progression and shorter survival time. Cytokines whose primary function is to act as signaling molecules of the immune system have recently also been implicated in the pathogenesis of depression. The aim of present study was to investigate the relation between pro-infammatory cytokines [Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)], depression and stressful life events in patients with acute leukemia.
